back around there stood my beagle right in the middle of the table eating the mashed potatoes out of the bowl. My sons still laugh at this story and one son still says I served those potatoes anyway. I DID NOT! Also there was the year that I cooked the turkey with the neck and giblets still inside but thats another story. Your turn

One year my daughter and son-in-law and kids came 1000 miles to our home for Thanksgiving. He is very picky about food, but he really does love deviled eggs and the homemade bread. So, I boiled a dozen eggs, but didn't get to fix them until almost serving time. The eggs were just like rubber! I looked on the egg box and the date was about 2 months past the fresh time!! He ate lots of homemade bread. It must be hard having a mother-in-law like me, especially for a picky eater! He's now my Ex-son-law - wonder if that is why ....

How funny, I wonder does he still like deviled eggs . LOL

They were so bad, I couldn't even prepare them - LOL! I get way too distracted having a houseful of people and cooking a huge meal at the same time! When we have picky eaters, we usually just take them out to eat now. I've also cooked the turkey with all the giblets still stuffed inside!

Mine is not real funny nor a disaster but quite memorable. 10 years ago on Nov 23 I was making probably only my 5 or 6th turkey in 24 years of married life due to going to either in laws or my parents every year. Still called my dad (he cooked in our family) several times that morning to make sure I was doing it right. We hadn't gone to my parents because our 1st grandchild was due any time. Yes, the turkey had been in the oven for about 1 hour when the call came to meet my daughter and her husband at the birthing center. By the time we arrived we had a granddaughter. Dinner was late, late that night but well worth the delay. Becky

I was cleaning house waiting for all of our relatives to arrive (we usually have 18-20 for turkey day) when I went to my sons bathroom to give it a final wipe down. Somehow, I slipped on some water as i walked in and my foot hurt really bad. I sat down for a few minutes and when I looked at my foot it was swolen and the toe that hurt was purple. Yep, I broke it. So at least I didn't have to do the serving or much of the cleaning. Thankfully I had gotten all but the last minute cooking done earlier that day.:)

Not a thanksgiving story from me as I live in GB, but a similar disaster happened to me. I had just married and the first Xmas my parents (from holland) and my mother in law came to stay. The evening before Xmas I laid the table, decorated it with all my good and still new plates. My cat managed to drag a pidgeon in. It was not totally dead yet and must have flown round our dining room for quite a while, leaving all kind of small presents for me. The cat had chased the pidgeon all over the room and killed it in the middle of my table. I can tell you he was not very popular that day!

I think your cat is related to our new kitten.

Well as you know I am an Ausie, so no thanksgiving here, we have Australia day on 26th January. But I love your story about the mash Bev. I have heard my kids report things that are soooo not how it was so many times I can really relate.
hugs.

One year when my son had to go to work at 4:00 p.m. I thought we would eat at noon. It was a big turkey and I put it in the oven. I kept checking it and it was not getting done. Here a burner in the oven had given out and was not working. What a time I had shoving that big turkey into the microwave. It took forever to have dinner that day.

I bought a large microwave - back in the 80's - just to cook a turkey - I still have the microwave and it will cook and brown a very large turkey in about 3 yours. Hehehe!

My daughter reminded me today not to forget to serve the stuffing. One year I forgot that it was in the crockpot, but no one said anything. So I guess they didn't miss it. My daughter in law put the turkey in the oven and forgot to turn it on. It turned out to be a late dinner. Still good.

I have heard of some really bad experiences over the years from some of my students, but we have only had minor things like the giblets burning in the pan, or the mixer being turned on with the beaters loaded with sweet potatoes....but hopefully NEVER as bad as National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.....or the Christmas Story Thanksgiving seen with all the dogs.....

I love the christmas story with the dog scene and the part where she tells him you'll get worms from the uncooked turkey. Also Chinese restaurant scene always makes me laugh no matter how many times i watch it. If you have never seen a Christmas story it's something you must do.

This isn't so much a disaster as just funny. One thanksgiving just as my inlaws were dishing up everything. My sister in-law stumbles out of the kitchen laughing so hard she can't stand up.She is followed by Uncle Tim who can verily talk. After him comes Granny Gran the family matriarch who is smacking Uncle Tim with her huge black patten leather purse. All he can do is laugh harder. After Tim got his breath and Granny Gran calmed down, we got the whole story. Granny had been sampling some of the holiday dishes and lost her false teeth in the dressing. I don't think I have ever laughed so hard.

I think we have all forgotten to take the giblets out at least once. I wouldn't call this a disaster, but it wasn't pretty. One year I let someone carve the turkey and she pulverized it. We didn't need knives that year to cut the turkey. If I had added BBQ sauce I could have called it pulled turkey. But it still tasted good and no one complained.
