Turned out I got to the end of a spool of thread and it got caught up and bent the needle while it was in the down position. I pushed the button for it to raise the needle and it couldn't so I turned the hand wheel and it came up. It made me feel a bit better to see that the machine disabled itself rather than cause more damage!

What machine do you have? I have a Brother 770, so far I haven't had any problems(there is no dealer near here either.)It is good to know that there are some safety features. My "baby" was 1 yr. in November. Unfortunately I have not had the time to do as much as I wanted to....maybe in the new year! :-)

Glad your machine was "smart enough" not to get in serious trouble! I hate when my machine goes off to the "hospital".

Praise God for the safety devices built into our machines.

This has happened to me this machines are like naughty little kids. I keep telling my daughter that but I don't think she really believes me. Glad nothing was really wrong. Arlene

I'm glad it was nothing more too. Now it seems my threader only works when it wants to and I do not have the steady hand or eyesight for doing it myself!

You can't turn your back on these mechanical critters! My machine's favorite offence is to get the thread wrapped around the spool just above the spool and below the cap. When it gets tight it pulls the needle sidewise and it breaks and then the machine starts screaming at me! Don't you just hate when that happens? LOL

Yep, you can't take your eyes off of them for a second.

My husband has one of my machines out of town with him right now and that is one thing I cautioned him--never leave the machine unattended.

You were very lucky Debra. My old machine would certainly not do that. Hopefully there is nothing wrong with your machine. I have learnt never to leave the room when my machine is sewing. *4U to cheer u up.

I had to though, it seems they only act up when you do leave the room, well, mine will act up when I turn my back to it!

Yes this has happened to me too. From a comment of yours further down about reading the book with your machine. If it is the size of the 'books' that I have we would spend more time reading than sewing. Anyway glad that it was not major so you can keep on sewing

It is fairly thick and I usually only go to it when I have to, it's easier to ask a cutie than to search the book!

Mine has done that many times - with me in the room or not - it is a great feature that is for sure. So happy to hear that nothing else was wrong with it. Keep on stitching. *4u.

That might be a feature of your machine. Mine will stop when something isn't right.

Very lucky! I would cry if it broke cause there are no Brother service centers anywhere that I can find! After Christmas money goes to replace plumbing in the basement that is rotting out and after that a new stove, I have to light all the burners with a lighter.

I know, it never happens when I am sitting here staring at it, but take my eyes off it for one second and boom!

It seems our machines are just like small children, leave them for a minute and they get into trouble....so glad your machine is alright.

It is only one but acts more like a 2 year old, lol!

I like your comparision. My kids used to know how far the phone cord stretched. Really surprised them when we got our first cordless phone. LOL
