I've got a free monogram alpha set up at http://www.mybargainstuff.com - once it's done, it will start over from A again since quite a few people missed the start of it & asked me to "re-run" it. Have several more going up over the next few days too - feel free to grab them!
Depending on what machine you have and what level of sophistication and detail you want there are many digitizing software programs available.Just because one costs more does not make it better for you either! Most people buy more software than they need or will ever use. Most cost many, many hundreds of dollars. The average beginner can get by with purchased designs. If you want a free full set of fonts/alphabets to get started try going to www.designsbysick.com where they also have free designs every half hour. The font design set is at their free Yahoo group. Many of the people that visit here also visit that site too so I am sure you will feel right at home! Good Luck!
Hello dailylaundry, I too am new to this site. I have been going through the site and there are so many talented people in here. Go to the project area and you can see some of the creations of the members. All are beautiful. Now asa for your question, all the answers you have been given are good ones but mumra if you buy the font engine for Embird you can use any ttf that you have on your computer and turn it into embroidery. They have some 20 odd already digitized fonts available for purchase. I personally love Embird but you will find that it is mostly a matter of ones own choice with allot of stuff.
Dailylaundry, (hope that isn't what you do all day, haha), welcome to the site, and here’s a flower for you, good to see you here. I’m just wondering whether you mean fonts or alphabets. I don’t know if you understand the difference between the two, if you do - then ignore this next bit, because I’m going to say it anyway (someone else might find it useful, who knows). With *Fonts* you can actually type the letters into your machine, or into a program to run with your machine, thus writing can be done all as one. Fonts have to be written specifically for your machine or software. *Alphabets* are individual letters done as a design – the same as any other design, and if you want to embroider writing with an alphabet you will need to combine all the letters, using your software, or your machine if it can do that. As to which software to buy, it’s an individual choice depending on your machine and what you want to do. Read back through some of the old questions, you’ll find some very useful info on digitising software. Most software manufacturers let you download their product for a trial period, for anywhere up to 30 days, so try some of them and see what suits you and your machine. Hope all this helps, have a fun day everyone.
FiveStar is also offering fonts. Go back through some of the previous questions and answers. I have picked up a few new sites that way. This site is a bit more consistent if you are looking for free designs and they aren't that expensive to buy if you miss one.
What brand of machine do you have
Ihave a Brother Innovis 4000D and the PEdesign 6 software if you nees assistance.
Thanks so much for the offer. PEdesign 6 would be wonderful - but, it is a little more than I can afford. But, I appreciate your kindness!!!
Depends on what kind of machine you have. I advise purchasing the software that belongs to your machine ie hus is huqvarna, pedesign is brother. Good luck
You can get several alphabets and fonts for free on the internet. Land of a thousand stitches has at least twenty lovely free fonts and Sewforum.com also has free fonts. Both are free to join but you must be a member to access the free designs. annthegran has free designs and alphabets for anyone. However when getting fonts you will still need software that allows you to merge the letters to create words or monograms. Embird basic with the font engine will allow you to do this but I think only with their proprietary fonts (won't work with others). I use smart sizer gold and there are others out there. Google free machine embroidery software to get an idea. Good luck. Being able to add words to a design opens up a world of possibilities :-)
Mumra
Thanks mumra, I realize now, that I need to do a lot a investigating!!!! I'll take a look at some of the websites you suggest! Thanks!
I went through google to get this and it came up with

That html must have gotten cut off; let me give it a try:

When you buy software you have a choice. You can either buy the software provided by the makers of your machine, e.g. PEdesign if you have a Brother, or you can buy a more general thing like Embird. Your dealer could advise you on the first, but he may be inclined to advice what he sells. There are sites that compare the different software packages, so surfing the internet might help. But first you have to decide whether you just want to customize designs: add frames, lettering, etc or if you want to learn to digitize. Most packages offer units to choose from or the whole Pro-thing. So see what you want, decide how much you can spend and then start searching. Good luck.
Thanks, mops, I only want to customize designs. I need to start small - invest small until I understand things better. I have a 4 x 4 hoop and am just beginning!
Thanks for your help.
