Instructions can be found at the link below, Print them out so you can follow them more easily.
I don't know if these will help, the site seems to take you round in circles. I think I would phone support and get them to help you, after all, it is their product you purchased so you should be able to USE it.
I hope I have helped in some small way at least.

Put in the CD, it can't hurt. If it gives you version 1.0 you will then do well to go to Brother and upgrade to the 1.7, it will make things easier. Without the CD I don't see how it can load the software to the computer. I love my PED-Basic but wish I had a spare card....they cost $50 on their own!
I have PEDbasic version 1.0. Never knew you weren't supposed to run the CD in Vista, just did it and I have no problems writing to a card.
How can I help you Mary? I have Ped Basic.
I need to DL the software but when I hook the device the pc says it not connected to the driver it sends me to add the CD but the manufacture says not to use it if you have window Vista. I went to Brother update page there are two things to DL i can not DL the first section a message comes out says that there is an error. I di Dl the second section i guess you need both to run the program?
I'm not completely sure I follow you completely but I'll have a look at brother site and see what I can find out.
Do you have any version of the software installed at all?
Have you tried to load the CD and see if it will go online to check for updates. I am sorry I can't be of anymore help I found vista to be very frustrating, Windows 7 is much more sophisticated than any of the other windows operating systems. I would put the cd in the drive and see what happens. Now I will wait for all of the computer phobic cutes to come along and contradict me, and say, "never put a cd in the drive if the manufacturers advise you not to". So before said people get here I will say Rubbish, put the cd in try to set up and you will likely be guided to the upgrade for your software, or it just won't work, in which case the only lost is less time than I took to write this message.

I have PED Basic and I also have Vista (which I HATE) and I downloaded it. It's been quite awhile since I did it so I don't remember exactly how I did it but I think it took me somewhere that told me how to use it with Vista. I know this isn't much help but I just wanted to let you know that it can be done.
