Embroidery thread, I feel I must share this with you in hopes of saving another cat's life. My cat died a few days ago from eating embroidery thread. The Vet found the thread during autopsy.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have 2 cats and they sit right on my embroidery table while I am sewing. They are like my children and I know how I would feel if I lost one. I will certainly be more careful after reading this.

I am so sorry for the loss of your cat. No one knows how you feel unless they have loved an animal. I can feel your pain. My animals are like family and when you lose one it is a terrible hurt. We almost lost my sisters cat last month due to thyroid but she is doing better. Thank you for the warning I will keep all my thread away from my cat. Suzanne

That is horrible and I feel your pain and loss. I too have a bulldog puppy that thinks everything is edible. We have to watch him carefully. My dogs spend alot of time with me in the sewing room as well. Wendi

Icana, I know how sad it is to lose a cat - mine was 18 years old when we put her down. Dogs are also at threat from the thread. Mine got a piece of thread in her claw, licked it off and I ended up pulling a 12 inch piece out of her throat. I hard lesson for all of us. I empathize with you on your kitty. It's hard to lose a friend.

How absolutely terrible and sad for you. I love cats but probably won't ever have another one to break my heart. They are such sweet companions.

So sorry to read that your little fur baby has died. It's a hard way to find out what those spare loose threads do to our animal friends. Thank-you for the warning even though it must grieve your heart to have lost a cat this way. Love Chris

Dear Icana, you must be feeling so bad because of the loss of your little cat friend, I'm so very sorry! Thank you for sharing your warning with the group in spite of the pain it must have cost you.

Folks, cats and dogs will eat thread clippings left on the floor, or even from whole spools if they can get at them. Some cats will even dig thread clippings out of a wastebasket! I don't know if it's the thread itself, or something in it like the sizing or lubricants on embroidery thread, but the stuff is irresistable to kitties. Unfortunately, more so for cats than dogs, it can get twisted up in their intenstines and cause a blockage, or actually get wrapped around a loop of intestine like a lasso, and cause the blood supply to be cut off and the tissue to die, like if you left a very tight rubberband on your finger for a long time. Keep rubber bands away from kitties, too, by the way! Sometimes it can cut the bowel, causing it to leak into the abdomen, which is certain death, in animals or people, like a burst appendix. Please, please pick up your threads, thread scraps, etc.! If you save scraps, keep them in something that can be closed up, and keep any pincushions, etc. high up where kitty can't reach. They will swallow the hand sewing needle on the end of the thread, too!! If you wouldn't want your child or grandchild to have it, put it up out of kitty's way, too, just to play safe!!

Icana, thank you once more for bringing this to everyone's attention despite your grief. I'm so deeply sorry you had to find out the hard way, my heart hurts for you and your lost little one.

Big hugs, Marji

Hi Marji,

Lovely to see you on here after such a long absence. I am thankful for the warning - Bella luckily doesn't eat my threads. I would hate to think an animal dies from our lack of understanding of what it can do to them. Love Chris
