as an answer. I used to hate working with green but my pet peeve thread is now red, just because I have been using a lot of red lately. But the thing is the more heavily died the thread is the more compromised the integrity is, so obviously the more it will break. But, is black green or red more heavily died, and which, will break more often. I am so looking forward to your answers on this.

Hugs and flowers to all cutes who answer this.
Alice.

Yes black and navy is the ones I have trouble with It helps if you will spray your thread with spay on silicone, it works wonders

The only thread I have had major problems with (since using a thread stand) is this one spool of white, which I was trying to do an FSL sleigh with for the first time. It constantly broke, so I shifted to an FSL ornament that I knew sewed well, with white and red, and guess what! The white still broke, the red sewed wonderfully. I think every colour occasionally has a bad spool.

Gold tends to break on me too.

Black has been mentioned before as often being overdyed when a colour is no longer wanted -easier to go darker than lighter, of course! I also think the 'doover' one puts on top to help the thread feed smoothly makes a huge difference and I don't know anyone who uses the actual thread holder on top of their machines (and doesn't curse lots)! Having the thread run over the top and from the floor or on the table rather than the machine helps some if having issues. Allows kinks to lessen, I guess with more distance.

Black has always been my nemisis - but ocassionally there will be another that gives me fits. I know that certain brnads of threads break more than others, and I usually try to stick with one - but, as you know, we all like "bargains" and I have a few out in the sewing room.

No apart from some cheap stuff I got once. My dealer said the thread was rubbish and not to use unmarked threads on my machine as it creates lots of fluff and makes a mess of the innards/workings of the machine. My reply was I would get rid of the unmarked threads and I would give them to another of his customers. He had a good laugh and I need to go through my threads and put the unmarked ones together as a gift to someone who has 3 very heavily used machines who will not worry about the problems...

This is really weird, the only color I have a problem with is Grape. It is not a dark color, it is more like a pale lilac. It is from robison-anton. I think maybe i just got a bad one. I put it in a baggy and in the freezer for a hr or more, that is when I think to do it ahead of time!

I, too, was told the black will break more often. But I've had breakage with all colors & all brands! Was told Coats & Clark was the worse, YET my machine works just fine with it! Have a large spool of red that just wouldn't work. Put it up for about a year, got it out when I needed red, and it worked just fine. Strange. I also have trouble with it sorta hanging near the end of the spool. I think sometimes it breaks when it gets hung and too much pressure on it. Must be one of the mysteries of sewing? But have always been told not to use the cheap off brand of threads. One brand I've used that is NOT cheap leaves so much lint I won't use it! I won't mention the name as I don't want to give them bad press! It was regular sewing thread, not embroidery thread.

Yes I have had problems with some colors, but seem to have more problems as I get close to the end of the spool where the thread is wound tighter. I mainly use R-A Poly. But when I use rayon I have a big problem with breakage. The latest was a R-A rayon in a light purple. I like you am trying to figure this out. My Pfaff seems to be happy with most brands (I have some Brother, Coats and Clark and Sulky as well as the R-A) as long as it isn't rayon. Am wondering if it could be the needles? I use Schmutz needles made for embroidery. What do you think? Mary

Great question Alice. I had to go yesterday to get my serger re threaded because I just couldn't get it right. (being a lefty, it is difficult to thread from that side. :( )While there Dave (the owner) was telling me that cheaper threads have "slubs" on them and caused the thread to not work properly with sergers, the cheapest slubby thread is Sure Lock. (of course that was what I was using. hehehe), but that got me to thinking and wondering why my embroidery thread would break and I've been watching it closely. When I have to re thread my machine, I've noticed that the thread begins to untwist. So something in the machine is making it twist thus causing the thread tension and begins unraveling and break. There have been times my threads are so twisted that it almost looks like eyelash thread. So I have to say there isn't a particular color, but the way a thread is wound that causes mine to break...

I always think it is the black thread that breaks more often. Or is it that I use black more than other colours?

My machine hates any thread other than Isacord, now why would that be? It is a Bernina and they say to use only Isacord, but I can't comprehend why there would be so much of a difference between threads...I have to slow way down on sulky, madiera, robison...metallics are a nightmare...just thinks it is some kind of thing isacord and bernina have going and I don't know how they do it....Isacord never breaks no matter how fast I go, and all the others break no matter how slow or where I adjust the tension.....conspiracy...LOL!!

Vicki my Janomes like Isacord as well and now I mostly use KingStar which is also okay. I believe it's more the thickness than the brand or silkiness and think that's why tension tends to mess up when we change threads from thicker to thinner or Poly to rayon etc. Mine seems better when I stick with the same, anyway!

With me it seems to be red, 2 different brands but not enough breakage to cause me concern.

Robison Anton is my go to thread. My machine likes it the best. Sulky is one I have always had problems with.

White and black! I had so many breakages with these two colours (different brands) that I went to the added expense of purchasing Madeira Whites and Blacks from AllStitch in the States, now I won't use any other brand for these two colours. Madeira is such great quality they never break.

I had a problem with some new white and black thread cones from YLI. Turns out the company missed a step in the finishing process and made the thread break all the time.I was having all sorts of issues with it and thought it was my machine. As soon as the dealer changed the thread for me it was fine! Could be your thread and not you. Suzanne

I found that Black used to give me more problems when I used to do Dressmaking, but have had little problems in Embroidery, with the threads I use.
Hope you get good answers.
Hugs and God bless. Marietta.
