I've found it helpful to us a ballpoint needle when doing t-shirts in addition to good stabilizing. I don't hoop my t-shirts either.
dlmds & brenda, I need to clarify something - I did use a heavy weight tear away for this design - but with MOST t-shirts - I use a POLY MESH cut away stablizer - which is the normal for me. I use two layers if it the density is high or one if it is normal - but I like using two layers of the wash away on top - the thin kind that looks like clouded plastic. Hehehe, I hope you came back and read this.
dlmds, what works for me - may not work for you and your shirts or fabric. Let me tell you what I do for some of my t-shirt projects - when they are large and dense. I always stabilze with a heavy weight tear away stabilizer (if I don't have a heavy weight I will use two of the light weight - floating one on the bottom) - I don't hoop the t-shirt but do make sure that the first stitch is a basting stitch - to tack down the t-shirt - so that it does not shift on me - I use a two or three sheets of wash away stabilizer on the top - depending on the density - the whole thing has to be stable in the hoop at all times. Good luck, I by no means now any more than any other member of the coummunity, so let us hope that someone else may have more knowledge and will answer your question, too. Alway do a test with a new design - so that you don't have a new fancy dust rag. Hehehe! A*4U Shirlene
