If designgirl's pattern isn't right send me a pm. I have one that's similar from Simplicity. You don't have to do the leaves.
By the way. The 80's is when I went through a serious knitting phase so I just had a major flashback looking at the patterns!
Thanks sewmom: I know this isn't the pattern, but possibly could work. I will let you know after I hear back from Designgirl. Thank you for taking the time to look for me. I really ppreciate it.
My best friend is away for 3 months and she may still have the pattern. She taught me how to knit, so think she might be able to make up the pattern, when she gets back, if all else fails.

I have found the pattern in my Mother-in law old knitting books. The picture looks like the one your daughter has on. This is a photocopy she had, so I will try to type it out and print it so I can scan it to send it to you. Does your pattern take small needles then very large ones. Let me know, but I think this is it. Hugs Lynn.
Hi Lynn
I believe the band was done on small needles then the body on one large and one small. I will give you my e-mail address in a private message. If you can scan the picture and the pattern, I would be very appreciative. I will know if it is the right one, when I see a full picture.
Thank you so much for taking the time to help me out.

I will e-mail you in the morning ,if that is okay. Yes it is large and small needles in the body part. Hugs Lynn
Here is Jerri's daughter Leslie now.
Here are a couple Knitting patterns that are simple with directions.
Thank you for the links, not the one I am looking for, but do appreciate you taking the time to help.

It looks as if the shape is simple rectangles without any shaping for armholes or neckline. I made quite a few shaped like that too back than. Following Sue's instructions you can't get wrong.
As for the stitch pattern it looks like what we called the 'lazy knitters stitch'. You only use knit (no pearl) and on the front you loop the thread around the needle 3 times instead of one. Going back you pick up one of the three, knit and let all three loops slip off the needle. That gives a row of long stitches followed by a row of stitches in the right width that hold the shape well.
My grandma used to knit scarves that way, simple, but fast results.
Does that give a similar effect to knitting with one thick needle and one thine one?
Yes it was pretty much a rectangle shape, because I don't know how to follow patterns when it comes to increase and decreasing. I don't recall doing what your saying,as for looping the thread etc. I think it was just straight knitting.
A thick needle on the right side and a thin on the back would give the same effect, but getting a thick needle in a smaller stitch is a bit more difficult IMO.
Knitting patterns are all about arithmetic. Choose some yarn that feels right for the job, and then try different needle sizes until you get the effect you like in a sample piece. Count the stitches per inch and multiply by the width you want and there you go! It really isn't difficult. PM if you need more precise instucyions.
Jerri - here is your picture of Leslie's Sweater - I just copy and pasted it from thes posting in projects - but you could have uploaded it here - if you did in projects - you just have to answer your own question and then upload it - just like this:
It is a lovely sweater and I hope someone can help you with the pattern of it for Leslie's surprise.
Thanks Shirlene:
I knew you would know how to do it. Lets keep our fingers crossed that someone still has the pattern. I would love to do one for Karlie (Leslie's Daughter) as well
Sorry I can't help but would also be interested in that pattern. I made several of them back in the 80's also. I looked through my stash & can't find it. Good Luck
Thank you, If I can get Shirlene to help me put the picture here, it might trigger someone's memory.
