Do I sew the pattern out once as a guide then cut my fabric shapes then start all over again placing the fabric as I go or do I sew over a big piece of fabric and try to cut it around the edges. Yes as you can see I am an applique virgin and need some good tips.

Here is a basic one, most files have an outline stitch that will guide you to place your 4x4 or larger pc of material, next stitch is to tack down the fabric, take hoop off and trim as close as you can using applique scissors or your sharpest ones in the house. Once that is done, put your hoop back into machine and start next stitch. Basically you use the same color thread throughout the file, even though it shows changing colors on machine. It only helps us visually that it is at the next step. I dont use spray, dont want the mess, I do iron my fabric, have cheated at times and regretted it. Must iron. Always use same color thread for bobbin and top of machine for final satin. Hope this helps. :)

Both methods are used. The shape being cut before applying is the one featured in one of EmbLibrary's tutorials. You have to be very precise with the placement, but the cutting is easier.

The second method you mentioned, cutting the fabric after you let the machine embroider the attachment line, is shown in the designsbyjuju tutorial evajungermann mentioned. Placement is of course no problem at all, cutting is a bit fiddly, but really sharp scissors and a steady hand make a big difference.

You might try out both methods and see what you like best.

I would like to add this. If you use the second method on materials with a pile - fleece, towels, corduroy - place a piece of wss underneath your applique material. Cut away the applique material, but NOT the wss. It prevents the pile being damaged when cutting.

Applique is very easy to do, just start with a simple one and the machine usually tell you what to do. enjoy.

Usually the first colour tells you where to put the fabric, the second stitches it down and the third satin stitches the edges. (Trim away the excess fabric between 2 and 3)Choose a very simple design to start with and after that you will regognise which bit is which in the other designs. Applique is very quick so it is easy to try designs out. I have done lots of applique by hand, by ordinary sewing machine and now with my embroidery machine. The tricky bit is trimming away the excess fabric without the fabric moving in the hoop. (You need to get it really tight)
