I achieved very good results with ordinary cotton sewing thread (in the bobbin too) and a matching needle (75 for sewing)with a redwork design. I wanted this to have a vintage heirloom "handcrafted" look on linen.
Needle have to match the thread, but no problem with tension.
These problems I face with special thin bobbin thread.
(of course it is not the same thickness as the rayon I usually stitch with) and I think this caused the tension problems.
Since then I use for embroidery polyester sewing thread in the bobbin.
It would mainly depend on the gauge of the cotton thread you choose to use. If it is thicker than the standard machine embroidery thread you would need to loosen your tension as well as using a larger size needle.
If not, then you should be right to go as normal.
The best indicator would be if the thread shreds or breaks, then you will know you need to change things.

Hi! I have the MC 11000SE and have done FSL using cotton thread. I use a larger size needle and have never changed the tension on my machine. Hope this helps.
