Thank you all for you thoughts. I have never been so worried about FNQ as I am today. Don't ever remember cyclones like this one and Larry when I lived there. Now in Adelaide where we don't get cyclones but high temps - 42.9 last Monday.
My prayers are added. My husband and I visited Australia last year and loved every minte of our visit.
We will be praying - please let us know - how everyone is. *4u
We're on the tablelands behind the forecast landfall of the cyclone and received damage from Larry a few years back. Apart from battening down and being prepared there is little else one can do. Having been through a few other big blows on the coast too; most folk regard it as part and parcel of living in the tropics. I'm a bit fed up with all the news hype though - to the initiated, it is almost tantamount to panic-mongering. I can only imagine how newcomers to the north are getting a bit paniced by what is being broadcast so frequently. MY thoughts are with those who will be affected by the tidal surge in the low-lying areas along the coast. I wish them all the best of luck.
I have friends in Yungaburra. I spent many a school holiday in Ravenshoe where my Mother was born
I don't know if you are a praying person or not, but we can all pray, and we are, that the damage is minimal. I know what you mean about scare mongering, but I was only a little girl at the time and I will never forget what happened in Darwin when Cyclone Tracey hit, and I lived nowhere near
Darwin, yes in the tropics, and subtropics (where I am) we expect violent weather in the summer. The reason that Tracey devastated Darwin was because those people had no warning. So even thought I don't approve of scaremongering, in this case I think it is necessary, and I hope it saves some lives.
BTW, I am not trying to diminish cyclone Larry, but this system does appear to be bigger and nastier. So I am very pleased that you have your hatches battened and I will pray that you and all of my fellow Queenslander's in the the North stay safe and hopefully keep their homes in tact.
Alice.
Have just realised that you live in Tolga. Stay safe and when it is over please let us know.
I think I just heard that 9,000 people are being evacuated. I do hope that everyone stays safe.
Alice.
