For all you ladies in the US - how do you do your businesses? Stores, Flea Markets, Etsy, Ebay, Online? What works and what doesn't.... and then - what about the government? As I sit here and do my taxes I realize that if I start this business I want to start here in town - I may not have to worry about sales tax because the company I rent space through will pay that for me - but I'll have to pay self-employment tax - yuck!! How do ya'll handle this?

bonanzle.com is a good place to sell also, and compared to eBay, they have really low fees. Lots more options there. You may want to check it out, if you just want to sell a few items.

I also stitch for local stores. I don't have a business license. Some times I wish I could buy whole sale, but I watch sales and clearances and buy blanks that way. I do more as a hobby and sell some here and there. I like it this way. Kay

Well I have found so far - that there are a few sites that don't require you to have a business license to buy wholesale. For the life of me I can't find them in my bookmarks (they are more of a mess than my embroidery designs) but I found them by following links on this site for other various things. I should keep better track!!

I owned a store front business for years and keeping up with the paperwork and taxes was a pain in the patootie...Here in SC we are allowed to sell at flea markets 4 times a year without claiming anything. If we do it every month it's considered a job and we would have to apply for retail license. I used to sell on Ebay, but their fees are just too much. I sell on ETSY, and made my first sale with them recently. I also sell to local stores here at a wholesale price. Which means I don't make much of a profit. As long as I make under a certain amount a year form selling locally without license I'm fine. If the store buys over a certain amount then I have to claim a 1099 for myself and claim what I was paid.

I live in SC too - but close to Beaufort - that's where I want to put my store - in Fordhams old Market. They rent out retail space for a fee. They don't require you to have a business license because they take care of all your sales tax. You pay them rent and a portion of your sales each month. But I wonder at the end of the day - how much I'd have to sell in order to make up for the Self Employment Tax I'd have to pay! I'm right close to the Flea Market in Savannah - but I would never go on Sunday because of church - so 1/3 of my booth fee would be wasted - and I'm sure I'd have to have a GA sales tax license then too and pay GA taxes. Why can't this just be easy?
