My husband works at a hospital so my entire sewing room is tables from there and they are all heavy duty and on casters that lock into place. They always get rid of things because they are a non profit and remodling is always going on from donations.
Bev, This has been the most interesting post. I have loved reading all the comments. Thank you and a very happy birthday.
I bought an old heavy wood desk at good Will for $10. It was so heavy it took 4 guys to put it on the trailer. When I got it home, it didn't fit through the doorway of my spare bedroom. Hubby was not too thrilled at taking the desk apart and reassembling it inside the room. It is great for embroidery, no vibrations. Now if we ever sell the house, the desk goes with it!
I bought some office furniture from a place that was going out of business. Then set them up with the U shape with my old machine cabinet. I also have an old drop leaf/extention table set up on risers for cutting. I took over half of my hubbie's workshop in the basement. It's not pretty but it's functional. I won't hold my breath for the walls.
Bev I did just that some time back. I found an old solid maple desk with a formica top. It has 3 deep drawers on ea. side & a smaller drawer in middle just right for scissors, snips anything small. I love ait. It is real heavy since it is solid maple , not scratched up plenty of room for my Babylock Ellegante 2 with room to spare on ea. side of it & in back of the machine. I love it & it was only $69.00 No vibrations when I sew or embroidery because it is heavy & best of all it's solid wood no prefab in it anywhere. Found it in an antique store.
That is what I want, just have to get out and look when the weather warms.I'll come up with something.
Bev
wow Bev. you do need more room !!!ihave a folding table the folds in 3 & when i need more room i just pop it up!!!carolyn
Sounds like a wonderful project and will be great when finished. Like to see some pics!
I have a kitchen worktop on some filing cupboards. In this way I could make it the whole length of my room and I have the filing cupboards for my paper work. Not that I have enough room. But that has more to do with all the clutter I have as the worktop is nearly 2.5 meters long!
I use a big flat paneled door stacked on filing cabinets. The doornob hole gives me a place for the cords to go it's huge so I can have lots of stuff stored up there, and the cabinets give lots of extra storage underneath. :)
I bought a u-shaped computer desk in 2007 and I've been L*Ving it ever since :) I plan to purchase another file cabinet to make another sewing area and get another bookcase to finally complete it soon...FIESTA ;D *2U
here is a picture of what i used to use--my old dining room table that i had to cut the legs 3-4 inches shorter so that it was a good sewing height. a cheap and easy solution leftover from my college days
i called that table the college kids special. we were poor students and that table with 4 chairs was $150. We got our use out of it for sure!
Looks like you have MORE advise than you need. BUT here is one more: HAVE fun & make it YOURS!
I purchased a 5ft. long, 30 inches deep heavy duty plastic top table with fold out locking legs from Walmart for approx. $40. It is placed against a wall
in the corner of my sewing room, so I can put my machine
in the middle, sewing notions in a plastic organizer with drawers to my left (also from Walmart), and to my right is plenty of room for my scissors, tweezers, etc. My threads are placed on threadstands that sit against the wall behind my machine on this table. I use a single
threadstand directly behind my machine for the one color I use at a time. There is room for my hoops at the far
right corner against the wall. Extra stabilizers and supplies are stored underneath this table againt the wall. It is the perfect height for comfortable sitting at my machine in my swivel padded desk chair with room for my feet, legs, and chair to turn.
I purchased a second table just like this one to make the two tables L-shaped. The second table is used
for cutting/measuring fabrics, stabilizers, and hooping. I love my setup! The tables are very strong, and you cannot beat the price.

I like your ideas. Mine are similar for the table top I find an old hollow core door. I found mine for $2 at Menards 'seconds'. Closet doors are best, no hole for handle. They are light and I can move them around myself. I change positioning often, depending on mood.
I have an L shaped computer desk that I bought from Staples. I have the Janome, my Kenmore and my serger on it. Then I also have a sewing table that has drawers and folds out really large if you want to cut material. I have had that table for many years and can not even remember when I got it or where I bought it. I have my Designer I on it. For my cutting I have a very large 6 foot by 4 !/2 foot heavy duty table that I bought from a sewing center that was closing. they used to use it for their classes. I think your idea of the heavy wood desk would work really well. Good luck with your next project. Hugs, Mary
Try the used office furniture sotes too . they have a lot of big old desks. Suzanne
I have my machine on my old sewing cabinet, It is big with drawers on both sides. I think your idea is great. Should work well for you. Suzanne
I have a plastic table with metal legs (it does not fold in the middle). I had to change from a little wooden computer table when I got my Quattro - it would not fit on the little wooden one! We were able to find one that would fit in my already very overcrowded room! I have plastic drawers underneath with my threads and a plastic trash can with my stabliziers (it fits between the legs of the table nicely). Would love to have something wooden and larger but I just dont' have the room.
well here's what my dh did for me - we went to Lowe's and Home Depot and checked out the counter tops, found one I liked at Home Depot, it has rounded edges so no snags. Then we found a 'lift' on the internet, so I can have my machine level with the table, push it poof down, push it poof up for the embroidery module. I got a insert from my dealer that fits around my machine so it makes a perfect flat top sewing area. Mega room for stuff, quilts in the process or anything else. We offset the lift to the right so I have lots of room on the left. We got a 8 foot top since my room isn't very big. Then we got another one for the other wall and that's where I cut my fabric and my serger is on the end of that. Then under it I have those rolling carts, pull it out to get what you need, push it back out of the way. Under the one with the sewing machine I have a basket type rolling bin, it has my bobbins, tissues in it. Works great!
I have a cabinet which opens up with my sewing machine and overlocker (serger) in it. If I use my embroidery machine I have to fetch it from my spare bedroom and use it on the table of the cabinet. I only have a very small area to work in. Like Lyn I also have the television on for company while I am sewing. Drives DH up the wall!!!!
I have a machine cabinet, but I like to watch TV while I am sewing for company (I am by myself) so I have a small table in my lounge with everything scattered around me. If the phone rings I have a problem to get to it as I have to clear a way. My friends know to let it ring for ages before they hang up.
Sounds like you have a lot of ideas, I have a small room and I am fortunate that my mum had a Horn cabinet and I use that. but also have a dining table which can be extended if neccessary...Hugs Sally
Mine is two knitting machine tables fixed together. It works for me in my limited space!
I can see you have plenty advice and from the looks of it - you know what you want - so just make a plan and get it and organize that room just the way you want it and get busy - you will have a ball.
In my house in NC - I had a large banquet table set up - for my machine - I had a huge walkin closet for all my supplies and extra shelving and storage - then I got my Ellegante - it was much bigger and better quality of stitching - the bells and whistles - but it would not stop jumping around on that table - so I bought a lovely cabinet for it - one I got on sale - that had a piece that was broken - we ordered the piece (the ended up giving it to us) and Rick did the work - so I got a lovely cabinet - that would work for me - so I put the banquet table to one side of the room for cutting and such - put lots of shelves and drawers under it for even more storage - then we moved to UT - I don't have room for all that stuff - so I have
my cabinet with my Ellegante set up on it and my drawers for my thread - at the end of that - I have a sewing table - that my Mother gave me - for when she came over with her machine - I have my other Ellegante sitting on it - which is right next to my PC and I can just swing around and use my machine or change thread - while I am working on the PC - in just a second or I can walk a couple feet and do the same at the machine on the cabinet. For now it works - until I can figure out a way to get more space in this room - then we will spread out some - hope you figure out - how to make your room work for you and you get the desk or cabinet or table that you need to work on. *4U
That's for sure!! for me it is like those little hand held games from YEARS back, where the little metal beads fall into the holes for points. My house and moving often has to be that way, I just shift things around 'til all falls into their correct hole & feels good to me.
I was really lucky to have gone to kmart for mine...they were having a clearence on their furniture to make room for the new styles..I picked up the last 2 kitchen country tables.. they are white with 1 long narrow drawer in the center....plenty of room to put my thread holders... embroidery machine, misc. plastic drawer cabinets plus the center drawer holds all my scissors, needles, machine tools, bobbins, etc. The best part of it all was I only paid 15.00 for each one...sturfy and gives me lots of room to work on...I can turn the tables at a L shape, side by side or back to back depending on what I need them for at the time.....
Every once in a while i come across a deal like that. haven't lately. If this blasted cold weather ever warms up I'll venture out. Hard to shop when it's 9 degrees like it will be tomorrow. And I'm in Texas!
Bev
For just embroidery a smaller table is fine cos U don't sit much at it. I find a seperate table for hooping and fiddling/snipping works better for me. There is storage space under both and little veg trolleys hold a lot of stuff.
Sewing machine on the other hand needs just the right height or your neck and back suffer.I cut the legs a little on the desk height to accomadate the free arm height diff .
Happy stitching on your 'New Baby'
From Bev
Thanks Bev. i do have another table but it's on the other side of the room and i piddle around in other crafts besides machine embroidery. I need to get organized but i'm having too much fun!
If it's big enough those old sturdy wooden desks are excellent for machine stitching. I have two six-foot blown grey plastic tables, one for cutting out and crafting and one for my two machines, sewing and embroidery. They do a good job but there is some vibration when I really stitch up a speedy storm.
My serger is on a little mobile machine table, one drawer and drop-down extension at the side, and that is rather wayward in its movements but it also does serve a good purpose.
I think your plan to purchase a wooden desk is an excellent one and you'll love having the deep drawers for your supplies.
I've arrived home from America and discovered that in my haste to pack my machines and hide them I also left large amounts of 'stuff' in their places, so even with all the table room that I do own I still have no place to put the machines at present...... I am sooooo longing to begin machine embroidering again.... :}
AlmaG.
I have my table stacked up with my machine and laptop. Also whatever I'm using at the moment. And under the table is even worse. I hope you get back to your embroidery soon.

Hi Bev,
My (
previous) favourite machine table is a 4'6" long and 2'6" deep, wooden desk, with drawers down one side and a cupboard with two shelves on the other side. I picked it up years ago from Salvation Army store for $35.00
It is solid and heavy and large enough to hold the super long Designer Diamond, but I have to be careful when embroidering with the large hoops as they do stick out past the edge.
When we just bought our new house, the vendor still had his wife's huge Partner's Desk from when she was in Chambers (She was a Barrister). He offered it to me because he knew I would value it and I can barely wait to get to use it. It is about 6' long and nearly 4' deep but only has drawers downs one side, but still the space underneath will be great for containers or even a mobile set of drawers.
It is sooooooo huge, it will become my favourite as it will hold several machines, laptop, overlocker. I already have four machines sitting on it, but I haven't set up my area yet as I can't decide the best layout.
I should tell you that my LEAST favourite machine table is my Horn sewing cabinet, sure they are great if you have a small space or have to fold it up to hide everything because it's in full view of visitors, etc. But they are so narrow it is impossible to keep larger projects on the top of it, they always fall down over the edge and then you have the weight dragging on your machine. Also, because it is on wheels, mine often runs away from me. LOL!!! Especially when I push back from it to wheely across to the other machine.
Just my opinion, but you can't go wrong with a big old timber desk, if you have the room for it.
Hugs n love, Meg
There is a guy in town who sells used office furniture for about 30 dollars a desk. His stuff in piled sky high and he does cut a good deal to get rid of it. I don't want one of those fiberboard things. Maybe while I'm there i can score some other treasures. i love a bargain!
bev
Ooh, me too! Good luck and don't forget to share the pics when you get something. :-)
