I just wanted to quickly thank all you ladies for responding. I have been down with the flu! In the middle of all the sickness, we have taken your advice, bookmarked lots of pages, written down many items to purchase and come up with a plan!! She actually picked 2 quilts. She decided on a double irish cross with celtic hearts for later in life (put that one on the drawing board for a while).... and she decided to continue on with the Return to Garden Fantasy with a very plain block style quilt that she actually found a picture of on a site where you could buy blankets. You ladies are totally amazing and I don't know what I'd do without you! Thank you all so much.
Get yourself some books by El. Burns she tells you step by step how to do a quilt from the beginning to the end.She has easyƩfast to advanced she has a website to called Quilt in a day .com !!!carolyn
Think I'd just opt out for a simple quilt....I've made several for girls going off to college in A Trip Around the World pattern. Or you might like to check out some of the large block patterns at quilterscache.com...this is my favorite go to site on quilting. Enjoy!
the golden rule with any quilt is it's colour combination. If you get that right, the simplicity or otherwise, of the pattern will be fine.

There are alot of ideas for quilts here.
Kids grow so fast and quilts can take a long time to get done so pretend your DD is a little older and make something to suit her then, they can appreciate your quilt for longer.
I've collected a lot of purple and lilac for my daughter, now she has a home and no purple colours,so her quilt is not getting done. Oh!Well back to the drawing board we go..
Happy stitching.

You are lucky your children even want you to make them things, my son thinks it's lame. Good luck, can't wait to see the finisg product...mm
He might change his mind growing a bit older... my son did, and now he continuously asks for home knitted socks, names on towels, baby blankets for his friends new baby and so on. Keep up hope ;-D / Peggy
I don't have the name of this pattern right now. I took it from a magazine but the magazine is in KY and I'm in Fla. Maybe someone else could give you the name. As you can see it's a fairly simple pattern. Rail fence and an alternate block. I did this for one of my daughters for Christmas. It sounds like you did so much work with the horses. Kids, go figure.
I agree a wonderful use of colour in a very simple block! It's amazing don't you think that after seeing the rail fence that when all put together that it would look sew good!
