i am in the last stages of creating my first crazy quilt where you use sashing and quilt as you go.

i had come to the part where the backing is neaten up to match the 30 front blocks and the thought of haveing to handle scissors for any length of time was a bit daunting and very off putting.
Then i the light went on in the brain cell. I allready use my serger to cut strips so why not use it to neaten the edges prior to the sashing being sew on
the thread was removed from the needles and loopers, and i could now start to simply run the blocks through the serger and the knife will cut off the edges and leave a nice neat edge. the job was completed in less than 15
minutes. all the blocks had a nice finish and my hands were saved from a lot of pain.
sometimes we have to think outside the box and use tools for other purposes than what they are designed for.
Tomorrow will see the finish of my third quilt.
I know they say that the crazy patchwork and quilt as you go is faster but i certainly found it more stitch and time intensive. However as it only cost me the fleece backing then i am not moaning as the rest of the fabric was free
from sample books and from large left over squares of fabric. 30 blocks meant 30 different fabrics.
its bright and gay and will keep my girls warm when they watch the telly and i got to try out all the decorative stitches on my machine.

i have placed a photo of the crazy quilt in projects for you to see. the best part of this quilt is the only outlay i had was the fleece for the backing as most of the fabric for the 30 blocks came from sample books that were being thrown out at a local fabric shop. i used sheeting to make the sashing.

I just got my serger in the mail 2 days ago and I wish that these directions made more sense to me!! I'm sure after I get the thing out of the box and work with it a bit it will - but I have 2 quilts that I'm working on quilt as you go and I'd LOVE and easier way to finish them. If I could use that crazy serger to finish them I'd do it in a heart beat - but I don't even know how to turn the machine on - let alone thread it yet!! I'm definitely looking forward to pictures of your quilt!! Sounds lovely!!

your serger has a knife blade that cuts away any excess from the edges as it sews i use this device without thread to cut my stips for quilting and also for neatening the edges of the blocks when crazy quilt as you go work before adding the sashing.. you can use the serger to actually make your quilt and that is my next project.
