tip of my finger, but I also broke a perfectly good needle. I didn't bleed on the design though. Now I have to deal with a fingertip bandaid for a few days. Sob Sob. I haven't done that for over 20 years.

What did you do, run out of fabric? :-) It sure looks like that had to hurt. Just about done it a few times but not. My friend did that just recently with her commercial machine. Had to pull the needle out with plyers.

Wow, I can't believe how many of us this has happened too! Me too! It was when I was a teenager also, it did hurt, so I feel for you-even my sister remembers it. P.S. (I'm sorry you broke the needle!!!)

I did that once about 40 years ago. The needle went right through the center of my fingernail. OUCH!! Never did it again, once is enough to teach us to never do it again.

by anangel 27 Feb 2011

The closest I have come to doing this was, as someone else stated, being impatient and trying to snip a jump thread while the needle is still stitching away. Luckily, it only caught the very edge of the skin on my finger and only a drop of blood loss!! I quickly dabbed that drop and reminded myself to be "patient"! I do like to use the liquid "bandaid", on finger cuts.

Hi Angel, Hydrogen peroxide will take out a little drop of blood at least. I'm going to get that liquid bandaid. Does it work on cracks on heels too?

Been there, done that. And it is dumb. But bet most of us have done it at one time or another. Feel better.

Ohhhhhhh - Hurt - I did that begore, but the needle broke and was stuck in my finger. I called for my husband to come pull it out for me - he was no where to be found. I got sick trying to get the broken needle out of my finger. It was sore for several days - good thing I had had my tetnus shot. DH just called me "Dumb ole Girl". Hope it gets better soon.

I've never sewn my finger, thankfully! But I do know a saying "Don't bleed on the fabric!" I hope you heal quickly.

by mi30kaja 27 Feb 2011

Can't remember the way it went, but once was said that you are not qualified as a sewer/stitcher until you have put the needle through your finger, so Congratulations! you can claim to be a stitcher. Lyn

I hope I never do that. I use to work in a curtain factory and have seen some people do this and have always hoped I wouldn't. Has to be painful.

by juanitadenney 27 Feb 2011

Yes, that is painful. I sewed my finger when I worked in a garment factory years ago and I had to go to the doctors and get a tetanus shot. Don't know which hurt the worst, the needle or the other needle. LOL Here's a flower for you to make you smile again. *

by gerryvb 27 Feb 2011

ouch, I think it will not happen a second time now, must be painful so now you will pay more attention, I think we all do- reading your and Marthies story. We better be all warned. Hope your finger recovers soon!

Jan, the closest I've come is with the scissors, being impatient trying to cut jump threads. Hope there isn't any bruising as we know how we need our fingers for typing on the keyboard, lol. Tracey

I did that when I had first started sewing when I was about 5. My mother told me if I put a needle through my finger I would not be allowed to sew for some time. So of course when it did happen, I never said a word and kept on sewing. Yet, dear mom somehow knew that I had done it, but figured if I wasn't saying anything she'd let it slide and see what happened. Never happened again - thank goodness.
Hope you heal fast.

No it is not being dumb. It is TOO MUCH IN A HURRY!!! This happened to me 3 weeks ago. I got such a frigth when I felt the needle that I pulled back and rib the finger open. Had to get stitches and only then I realised how important that specific finger is. I feel fore you

Oh My Goodness..... and for all the other gruesome stories that follow!!!!
My daughter has sewn her finger and her machines travel at full speed all the time. I haven't and don't want to.
I do feel so sorry for you and I also hope you are right-handed, which is probably why you stuck your left hand in the wrong place at the wrong time in the first place.
Wishing you a speedy healing so you can stitch in comfort again.

I haven't done that yet, but I did slice the side tip of my finger with the rotary cutter once.

juanitadenney by juanitadenney 27 Feb 2011

Your not the only one, I did the same thing a few years ago and never had anything bleed so much as that did. I am extra careful now and have a deep respect for rotary cutters. Here's a flower for you.*

hightechgrammy by hightechgrammy 27 Feb 2011

EWWWWW - That sounds just aweful!!! I bought one of those new Olfa rotary cutters that automatically retracts when you aren't squeezing it. When did you cut yourself? Was it while you were cutting, or when it was on the table, or?

2853
by capoodle 27 Feb 2011

If the cut isn't too bad I use clear nail polish (it does sting a little till dried). The band-aids get in the way and wet so I like to use the liquid bandage stuff on bigger cuts on my hands and fingers and that stuff doesn't sting.

One of the con's to our trade, he he dosen't it make you feel like a do do for doing such a dumb thing! At 11 years old I stuck my hand into the needle's path and felt a hit and pulled back my hand. I didn't feel anything but when I looked, there was half the sewing needle broken off and all the way through my index finger nail! I calmly walked into my sleeping mother, it was 6am, and woke her and gave her a pair of plyers and asked her to pull it out, still not feeling anything! NO infection followed and I was none the worse although my mother was pretty shaken lol

Strangely enough I've caught my finger several times lately, something I've only done once in the previous 40 years. I think it is because my fingernail are longer. It couldn't be a senior moment. :-D

by sewlikedawn 27 Feb 2011

This happened to me when I was a teenager. Stuck my finger in and the needle got stuck and the machine jammed! I couldn't get my finger out! I was home alone also!

I had to grab the wheel and go up and down quite a few times but this didn't work either! With one hand I had to unscrew the needle push down into my finger and them pull it out!!!! OUCH Yowee!!! Boy did that hurt!!!
Hope I don't have bad dreams tonight remembering!!
Just kidding! Hope your finger feels better! Mine throbbed all night!
