There are many ways of celebrating on St Davids Day which is celebrated in Wales. Lots of Welsh flags and the flag of St David are up. The Welsh flag has the dragon in red with white at the top of the flag and green at the bottom. St Davids flag is black with a yellow cross. Small children often go to school wearing the traditional welsh costume though many are now wearing clothes made from the Welsh flag. Older school pupils often wear clothes that are green or red. Many people wear either a daffodil or a leek in the buttonhole. The food that is very popular on the day is cawl which is a seen as either a soup or stew. This is made from leeks, potatoes, carrots, swede and lamb. It is eaten with crusty bread and lumps of cheddar cheese.
z\I have seen a leek eating ceremony in the past which was interesting. Our daughters school used to have a twmpath - folk dancing and cawl evening which was great fun, when they were little and there would be many little girls hopping up and down in their traditional dresses. At the end of the evening there would always be lots of lost black hats all of them the same...Today Prince Charles has been in Wales in Carmarthenshire and many Welsh people throughout the world will be remembering home. March First has had it's share of growing pains. In the dark days of the 1980's, the Quacking Duck Riots broke out one March First in the small Pennsylvania town of Hatboro.
The rioters were annoyed by Disco music and expressed their displeasure in odd displays throughout the region including single-file marches around houses in neighboring Upper Southampton Township.
As a result of the experience the borough of Hatboro passed an ordinance against being weird within the borough boundaries. The town has been peaceful since this action and the March First celebration has flourished.
Thank you, I saw the post asking about March festivities around the world and wondered. My Dad's grandparents came from England and I think about looking for relatives there from time to time.

People in Wales wear a daffodil or a leek but I think that is about it. Perhaps Caroline (asterixsew) will tell us more.
Lots of people are trying to revive celebrations for St George's Day (23rd April) but most people in England aren't very interested in their heritage which is a great pity.
