It depends on the project. Doilies I do in white poly. Started making color angels this past Christmas, and I must say, I like them. Did some candle wraps, and the edging I did in variegated blues. Liked that. And I have made icicles with white tops and pale blue bottoms. As they hang and twirl, it looks neat.

Hi Lyn - you use whatever colour suits your purpose but have fun!!! Try something 'way out' for a change and you'll probably be surprised and excited about it. Look at the doileys and bowl sets on the websites.
I am making a table runner from Marathon Thread in a lovely old-fashioned sort of ecru that has an almost silvery gleam about it, mostly so that it will resemble old-fashioned crochet work. To my eyes it will be beautiful. Susie, from Marathon Threads chose if for me. It's 100% viscose rayon thread - works like a charm in my machine.
Last night I stitched out one of Sue Box's free FSL lace motifs in cheap old 100% polyester La Sarta 3-in-a-packet-for-$2.50-from-Spotlight thread - only I got several packets in their sale for $1 a packet. I used a pretty mid-aqua colour and it turned out to be stunning. The La Sarta thread seems finer than the Marathon thread and the motif is very dainty. I'm really pleased with it. Maybe it won't last but while it does I am enjoying it and if it doesn't last I'll make another one. It's going to make one of t-shirts modest... :}

Lyn, we are going to have to open your eyes to what colors you can use on your lace - I do as most of the others have suggested - the same in the top and bobbin - the same to stitch it togethere as the main color of the thread or the main outline of the lace. The sky is the limit when it comes to lace - when you think of just white and ecru - you are limiting what you lace design can be or will be - be open minded - take a look on my site - under doilies - see some in lots of different colors - then if you stil prefer the while and ecru - no worries! Have some fun.
My DH always told me I had to think outside the square. Will look at your site now. Thanks.
I had no idea that you had a site. You should advertise it more often. Still like the more pastel shades for Lace - maybe I am old Fashioned?????????? Will send you a PM.
Lately I have been using the Maxi Lock polyester swirls(variegated) from Hancocks and have been really happy with it. I use whatever color I'm in the mood to use, that's the fun part. I have used rayon also on doilies. Just remember to use the same thread in your bobbin as your top thread. Oh, I did use cotton once, it was nice but just too much clean-up, makes alot of fuzzies. It's fun to try different ones and see what you like best. For now, I'm sticking with the Maxi Lock polyester. Carol
I have used the ordinary sewing thread before for lace but it makes it too heavy. I am looking for more delicate.
Lyn
I have used both polyester and rayon. I have not tried serger thread as some have used, but that is more like the crochet cotton thread these were orignally made from. I use the same thread in the bobbin as the top thread, and I have done, reds, pinks, peach, blues, golds, ecru, white, and varigated. The colors would be what you would like. Too, I have actually done mutliple colors in a few of mine - because the desgin called for it. The sky's the limit.
Thank you for this information. I must be old fashioned as I can only think of Lace in white or ecru. Lyn
I use polyester emb thread in both top and bobbin. Don't limit yourself to just white, cream or ivory is nice and also try something bright or varigated. just have fun.

I am doing some Bobbin Lace in a lilac so why do I think of Machine lace only in White or Ecru??? Lyn
I use the same thread that I used for the lace. Then everything matches perfectly. Polyester is what I like best.
