I have told them where I got it so they could get it and they would say well you just make it for me I don't have a machine that does that.Lenamae
I think sometimes just explaining things like directing her to the site like you did is very beneficial. Well done
Well done. Could also have included that you quite like your house and machines etc and would much rather not risk losing them over being charged with copyright fraud.
Think you made an excellent decision, now if she gets her feeling hurt it's her own fault. She should have know better than to ask you that in the first place.
HI Lyn
You done good :-)
Share the website address and Nothing else :-)
Many great digitizers have good fair prices and sales to go along with them..
There really is no need to to obtain a design illegally.. I personally would not want this type of design.
I have the other issue where people ask for me to do Disney designs for example.
I explain about the copyrights and offer something similer like a cute bear or something and make it personel for them.
big hugs from London

I think you've done well under the circumstances, Lyn, but I'd only write down two addresses for this lady...... 1) the address where the design she wants is available ... 2) the address of CuteEmbroidery.com where she'll find a wealth of websites to explore.
This situation pops up all the time especially when people begin machine embroidery. It's unpleasant to be caught on the hop but it's good to be fore-armed and my response, 'I'm sorry. I can't do that. It's illegal,' works.
People are usually interesting in 'why' it's illegal even though they'll argue from the point of view of having been denied something they want.
I then go on to say, 'If you give me your email address I'll send you the website address where I found the design.'
I've never been taken up on that offer. Even that little inconvenience seems too much for some people.
Another suggestion often put forward is to share the cost of a CD and then share the designs. My response again works. If the argument continues too long I just say, 'Just don't do it!!'
We all learn sooner or later about copyright laws and we all need to be ready to protect ourselves. Eventually people realise that breaking a law leads to someone getting hurt.
It's not so hard after you've made your first stand.
AlmaG.
If she has had her machine a while AND looks on the internet for designs she will have found this site already. One cannot help getting Cute up when searching for designs and machine emb info
You handled it right, Lyn - it is hard to say no, but better that, than legal actions.
Maybe or maybe not. I had my embroidery machine for several years and have spent hours collecting and catagoryzing free designs. Over the years I have also purchased many of them. A while back I stumbled across some disks of designs on Ebay. I thought, "WOW, what a good deal!!" I promptly ordered them without a thought. It was about 3 weeks later I received a letter from some attorney telling me I had made an illegal purchase. I then contacted my local store and learned about the copyrite laws. It has now made this old lady aware of that type of restriction. I was told that if I had designs on my machine and sold the machine, the designs couldn't legally go with the machine, even.
This reminds me of the design on cute about Oraganizatio. Some are to busy to look to on the sites to download. They want someone else to do the job for them. You could have told her to buy disk from a site. Im not trying to be mean. I stay on here and have downloaded more than I have done projects. I only have 2 projects posted. The designs are so great everywhere that I seem to want them all. "smile"
I think this lady is busy and couldn't spend the time to do the searching. She would probably never do the stitching either. L
The unbelievable response from a retired person that I have her webites..was she didn't have time to do all that. I said then it should be no problem for me when I get home from work and do all a wife and mother have to do before bedtime. Sorry I just was not thinking when I gave you the list. No I did not share my designs.
I have told my moochy friend that I'm glad to share all of my own designs with her, and the ones that I download for free I'll give her the links to the sites so she can also download them too. Some people are just "moochy." My dear MIL told me before she passed away she always allowed her friends "one big fault and two little ones, and usually they didn't get past one little fault" :-) She was a wise woman.
It sounds like you did the best you could do under the circumstances!
You handled that very well Lyn. My friend asked me last year, after she got her emb machine, if she brought over her stick could I transfer my designs for her. I explained to her why I couldn't but I would be happy to give her a list of the good sites and which ones I purchase from. She just looked at me and said "oh,I didn't know that!" I gave her a list of good sites and yes, she is still my friend. Carol
I could even offer to sell her the ones I have made. Then I would not have to pass on any sites. Thanks. Lyn
LOL!! That was a great answer. We Cuties are helpers, not enablers. FFA! Colleta
When I have been asked I explain that sharing designs is not like sharing a book. Same with sharing downloaded music. I think it is great that you are willing to share the different sites with her.
I got asked the same thing so I asked her what format she used. It was the same as mine but I said sorry mine is .hus. This worked and she has not asked again.
You aren't the one who should be embarrassed. That woman had alot of nerve. You did the right thing. A flower for you
Bev
I remember once a friend of our's owned candy shop in a mall. He said women came in all the time and wanted his recipe for chocolate to dip strawberries into.
Same thing. You came up with a good answer. Lots of work, but a good answer.
Some people just don't think. . I will give her 3 site addresses. Thank you. L
If they don't belong to the cute site they might not 'Know' it is not right to ask for designs this way.
I never feel bad, and spell out cuteembroidery.com to them where the can get all the links to lots of free designs.
Soon our family here will grow.
From Bev
I started off saying quick remove your photo, then thinking why should you be embarrassed? Is she a very good friend or someone who just hopes to use you?
I agree with asterixsew. You should not be embarassed - she probably should be but that will not happen. There are always people who not only want it for free but also want it made and delivered !
Some people just have no Class!! She knew was asking you to do something that was not right. You did the right thing although I think I would just have ignored her request.
Can't ignore. I will pass on the sites and she can check them out herself. L
Good for you, don't let her take advantage like that. We all did the work of going to each website, she should too. She wanted the lazy way out. *4U!
You did the right thing. That way you don't feel guilty for sharing something you know you're not suppossed to, and she can choose the ones she really wants. *4U and Hugs too!
you did really well, she needs to learn just like you did and she can go to the same sites but she has to do the work....good for you....
Yes I think you have come up with the right idea and it sounds like she wants you to sew for her? I liked the design so much I went off and bought it. Thanks again
Think most places ask you not to share these designs when you can go and download them for free for yourself anyhow. The one I paid for I would not have given to her and that is the one she really wanted. She also wanted me to convert them from my PES to her JEF. Lyn
Yes. As much as I feel for this Lady. I had to search for and buy designs when I started. Thanks. Lyn
That's exactly what I would do: point them to the websites.
