a self cleaning oven can relate to this. You just turn it on, let it run its course wheither 2 or 3 hours and wipe it out. Its impressively clean.

Now what I had to do....... spray it down, turn it on low to cook out the baked on grime, choke on fumes while cleaning the rest of the apartment (yes the windows where open for ventilation). Then after said time on can of oven cleaner, turn oven off, let cool, and get out the old fashioned elbow grease and try and make it look like a self cleaning oven would when its done. Not a job I enjoyed!!! Sure love my self cleaning oven!!

My oven is only self cleaning on the sides so I do what Bev does and line the bottom and the warming draw with tin foil. I personally think your friend should have cleaned her own oven and let you help with other things.

She's not much of a cleaner, lol! But she is a dear friend and would do anything for me, so a small sacrifice, lol!

Good trick: Line the bottom and the racks whith tin foil. Relace when needed.A sheet in the roasting pan itself helps clean up too.
You are a friend to be treasured for helping so!

I Have told her to line the bottom with Aluminum foil to make clean up easier. Thanks

What friends do for "friends"!! LOL But, don't think less of her; we all have our downfalls!! And,
not having a "self cleaning oven" is ONE of them! LOL

Will you be my friend???

ooo a self-cleaning oven, I didnt even know there was one lol. I use a non-caustic cleaner in mine (which is a gas oven): you wipe it all over a cold oven and wipe it out several hours later (you dont turn on the oven at all). Takes longer but no fumes to choke on...still its a job I seem to put off, if I did it more often it wouldnt be such a chore I guess lol

My mom puts her oven racks in the laundry tub after filling it with hot water and clothes soap then leaves them to soak - shame we can soak the whole oven :) xXx

When we were first married, I cleaned the oven in our apartment with oven cleaner. Being new to everything, I sprayed the racks and everything let it soak and when it came time to clean the oven with elbow grease, I set the racks on the kitchen carpeting, Ha Ha. When I lifted the racks to clean then, they ate through the carpet and left a rack mark where I set them. LOL When we moved out, we left the throw rug over the marks!

But how much does it run up the electric bill? It's just Grumpo and me now, so we use the little toaster oven. I haven't used the big one in a couple of years. Even thinking about getting a surface unit and no oven. More room in my little kitchen.

You sure must love your friend more than your oven! You're a jewel to take on that job!!!

Oh boy! why did you remind me? I do not like cleaning my oven and it is NOT a self cleaning oven. I have to buy oven cleaning but somehow i always forget to put it on my shopping list, I wonder why? LOL

Because you're smart! That's why! If it's there, you have to use it! :-)

Yuck. You are a good friend to do that. I am very grateful for self-cleaning ovens.

the oven racks being put in a garbage bag to soak is a good idea. I used to put them in with several cups of water and one cup of amonia and let them soak overnight outside of the house. Works great to get rid of the gunk. Mary

I do that too! Works like a charm-just don't breath the fumes when you take the grates out of the bag, and don't lay it on the lawn or it will kill the grass.

I'm with you there Diane. When we had to replace my built in oven ?? 14 yrs ago??? that was one of the 1st things that was at the top of my "MUST HAVE" list. Cleaning the oven is my most hated cleaning job in the entire house-and that includes cleaning windows, toilets or cleaning up after the dog outside. I told my husband that when we get around to remodeling the kitchen-I both dread and look forward to that day- self cleaning is at the top again lol~linda~

Hey Linda, I would rather clean the oven than go shopping. I would rather do almost anything than go shopping.

lindalee757 by lindalee757 06 Mar 2011

LOL-especially when you come out of the stores empty handed and get pulled over and ticketed huh Alice?? Sorry hon, shouldn't laugh at your ticket-I could get one tomorrow but...I couldn't help myself.....curiouser and curiouser ~smiles~

fannyfurkin by fannyfurkin 07 Mar 2011

It's ok Linda, my husband laughed, I still don't think it was funny, but I am always on his case about getting speeding tickets every other month, I get on my high horse about having 11 years of no tickets, so I guess he is allowed to laugh, and so are you.

airyfairy by airyfairy 07 Mar 2011

Alice - I also picked up a speeding fine the other day. First one in years and I was driving my husbands car!!!

Had to clean my daughter's apartment not self cleaning oven and we got the odorless oven cleaner. She ended up finishing the job but it did a great job and don't put fumes into your face. Had to spray on and let them sit for at least an hour, then wiped out the grim. Sprayed the heavy stained areas twice, but it is still was much more pleasant to use than the old smelly fumy stuff. The racks can go into a garbage bag and soak (good if you can get them out on the ground outside).

Thank you so much for reminding me I need to clean my oven today. I don't have a self cleaning oven, I must get one of those.(I might go with sewmoms suggestion instead)
Alice.

My new self cleaning oven isn't all that much better. It smells up the house like I had a fire for several hours. I had to use it when some sweet potatoes were put in the oven directly on the rack by a family member which will remain unnamed.

fannyfurkin by fannyfurkin 06 Mar 2011

I made yorkshire pudding the night before last, I had a bit to much butter in the trays and it spilled over and onto the bottom of my oven, I forgot about it and the next time I used my oven I had it heating and opened the door and the fire alarm went off. hehehe. Of course our stupid alarm goes off when my husband mows the lawn but at least we know it works.

I think I would just throw the oven out and buy a new one LOL. Was that an option?

Sure would have been a nice one, lol! But it was in an apartment, so had to make look pretty as possible, hehe.
