Deb, sounds interesting - I saw this design earlier today - the idea is what I am trying to show you - not so much the design - maybe you could figure a way to incorporate it into your sweatshirt - I would use a heavy cutaway for this sort of work - I will LQQK forward to seeing it in projects soon.
Thanks for all the great inspiration links! Let's hope I actually get around to doing what I think I can do, hee hee hee I was toying with using Ms Veronika's design that was offered a few days ago -the Celtic knot cutwork design and one that wasn't cut .....big dreams! LOL
Check you local quilt shops and sewing centers they may be offering a class on things to do with sweatshirts. I know ours is.
Thanks I've already done the projects they offered, :-( They were all quilting related with a small amount of embroidery used either in a crazy quilt pattern (with the sweatshirt being used as a lining or batting with an additional lining) I was hoping to find something that was a little more dressy - any ideas will be welcome *4U
If you cut the area out I would think it might be ok.(I use a fabric etching liquid but that only works on 100% cotton or linen) I would use an iron on no show mesh fusible (cutaway)because it keeps the sweatshirt from stretching out of shape. If the sweatshirt is really thick you might want to put a layer of something like Solvy over the top. I'm not sure you can get a really clean cut on a sweatshirt... I'll be watching for other opinions.

Thanks so much for the advice! That fabric etching liquid sounds like something I have to check out! I never heard of it.
It is called FIBER etch fiber remover. You apply a thin layer to cotton or linen. Dry with a hairdryer. Iron on the reverse side, medium heat, until light brown color. Rinse to remove fibers. For cutwork you stitch with 100% poly thread (cotton or rayon will disappear) and apply to both sides of the material if it is very thick. It is quicker than cutting especially if you have a lot of tiny cutouts. I had to buy mine at the Sewing Center where I bought my machine. None of the stores like JoAnn Fab. around here handle it.

Where are you from? Jo Ann Fabrics has it. I love to do cutwork and it is very good.
Thanks MJDG - that was a great explanation. I'll be on the lookout for the stuff - it sounds amazing!
