That is a really hard one for me too. Where I live, people are pretty frugal. Most of the time,I charge just for the item and loose out on the embroidery. I guess I do it for the love of sewing and not make a big profit.
Here are a couple of links that might help you figure things out:
I started a home based business 3 years ago... right before the economy went downhill. I had entered a craft fair that Fall, and didn't sell a single thing. People loved what I had done, but no one was buying. Everything I had made for the craft fair, I ended up giving away.
Forget the stitch counts... what is your time worth to you?
I guess I should qualify my statement about stitch counts. I just priced my stuff in the craft fair as: the cost of materials plus $1 per thousand stitches. All I wanted to do was break even just to get my ideas out there in the community.
Everything I do now, I start a record of what I'm doing, when I started and ended the project, and the amount of stitches per color change (more for curiosity's sake than figuring cost of the project). When I started charging by level of involvement instead of stitch counts, I started selling more of what I make... and have gotten several orders, here and there... enough to make my efforts worth doing.
This is true. Keep in mind the time it takes to set everything up before you start to sew!!!!
Thank you for all your help and suggestions. Love the websites that the community recommends also. Keep up the chat. New to the embroidery world, Judy

costs for the start means costs for stabelizer, thread etc
Hope this helps
Prizes are in EUROS but you can use a currency converter to change in $
Usually $1.00 per thousand stitches....but this isn't always the case as you can can have an item you need to charge by the piece or design as it will have too many stitches. Example being I have a FSL cross bookmark that has over 100,000 stitches and believe me no one will be paying $100.00 for it even if it is gorgeous. Best advise just use common sense.
That would be so nice. But with some of the things that I do, not possible. I did an eyeglass holder yesterday that took over 2 hours to work. The only reason I finished it when it started taking so long was just wanted to finish it after so long. Guess I'll keep it for myself. But I think that's a good working price.
As far as I know it's a $1.00 per 1,000 stitches. This is what I've read . I could be wrong so maybe someone else here can give more info . Hugs Edie
