Miss. was governed by the French, British, and Spanish before becoming a state. Cotton once made it the most prosperous states. Fertile farmland with a strip of dark, rich soil that runs across Mississippi and Alabama is called the "Black Belt". Cotton, Pond-raised catfish, shrimping, timber, and oil fuel their economy. Still today many rural areas. They do have some beautiful casinos on the Gulf Coast with great entertainment.
