I just recently went to JoAnnes and use my 50%off coupon to buy some drawers for my thread. It does work great. Isn't this fun.
The thread tree that Linda posted pic of is sold at Clotilde.com or at least thats where I bought mine.
I have 3 of those thread trees that I no longer use and would be happy to get rid of them for a nominal price. They are just taking up space in my room. Anybody want them?
Yes Karen-that is where I got them from-like I said-it was quite a long time ago, so I couldn't remember-thanks! ~linda~
Dawn,
If you have repeats of the same colors, I would suggest that you store the extras where they will be not exposed to light and in containers as airtight as possible. The reason is that light and air dries thread, making it more easy to break when exposed for a long period of time. I keep a set of colors on a thread stand near my machine, but the extra colors I seal inside a plastic bag and put them inside drawers that do not let in light, or cardboard boxes taped shut.
I just bought 2 sets (2 deep drawers stacked with clear fronts) yesterday at Walmart to store my fabrics and projects. These will fill quickly, so I will probably need more! Doesn't our stash grow fast?!!

I just went to Staples and bought 2 plastic carts on wheels to store all my new thread. There is a picture on another post of mine.
Thank you
Dawn
I used a inexpensive dresser we bought for our daughter when she was in college... its fits under my work surface right next to my sewing machine, very handy I'll try to add a picture
I use the plastic drawer units also Dawn-all sizes-because I use them not only for my threads, but for "all things sewing" I like the clear ones because you see thru them-plus I have labels on the front of all the drawers of the main contents of the drawers-this is just a partial selection-many more lol-yeah-I am a thread, notions junky-but I can quit anytime.....NOT! ~linda~
jeepers-I can't remember where I got them-Nancy's notions maybe???-I would have to look back in my receipts from about 5 yrs ago.I actually have another one(this one is really 2-stacked) and I have them both on turn tables so I can spin them.
Oh my goodness! Have you been doing this craft for awhile! LOL I like it everything is at hand. Thanks Dawn
I store my threads also in Drawers, but these are better quality than mine. Don't have the room to have any more.
I bought a set of drawers for mine. Wal-Mart. It has wheels and is perfect. Better than tubs. If you get the right kind you can stack them as high as you want to go. I did screw mine down on a piece of plywood and got a little larger wheels to go over my carpet. But it goes where I go.
Great idea about the larger wheels! I have carpet in my sewing room!
Thanks Dawn
Hummmm...you could just send what you can't store to me. :-) CD shelf sounds like a good idea for that much thread. I have got to try out this Metro Thread site everyone is talking about.
Just give me your address! LOL
This is the best purchase I have ever made! Go for it! I just love the thread!
Thanks Dawn
You mean the best purchase besides your embroidery machine, haha. You know I like those plastic storage drawers as you can see the colors (nothing blocking them) and you can get to them easy. I will have to do that very thing. By the way, here's my address..........:-) Embroider On!
I use plastic storage containers from Office Depot and Office Max for my threads. They are 6 drawers and have wheels if you want to use them. They are easy to organize and you can see through the clear drawers. I like the thread in a drawer because it stays clean and out of the heat and A/C. Link below to see it. The top is sectioned off and I use the areas for scissors, bobbins, etc.
This is perfect!!!!!! The drawers are not very deep! Thank you for posting this! So far I think I have my answer.
Thank you
Dawn
Be sure to take a spool of your thread to be sure they will fit in the drawers. I use ARC and Floriani and it all fits fine.
If you have a Bass Pro Shops near you look at their fishing tackle boxes. I use these as they have many different configurations. If you don't have one near you, check other sporting goods stores, maybe you will find something. Also, the cases that little boys used to use to store their Matchbox cars are good but don't hold as many spools.
Oh my husband would love this! He would be shocked that I would want to got to the Pro Bass Shop! Great Idea!
Thanks Dawn
Devon seems to have a very good idea....
I got my thread about 2 weeks ago and I got a 3 drawer plastic cabinet from Big Lots and it holds all 116 large spools from Metro and the bottom drawer is deep enough to hold the rest of the thread and about 4 containers of stabilizer. It is on rollers so I can roll it up to my chair and get colors needed and replace as well, then roll back into place.
I got this cd rack from walmart got 2" and 1" wood from work and put on the shelves, to stack to get to the back with thread.
This is a really good idea! I never thought about using a cd holder! Thank you for the picture!
Thanks Dawn
