For T-shirts, I use stickstitch that I have ordere to allstitch. I stick it on the wrong side of the Tshirt, put all in the hoop, and if the fabric is really too soft, I put underneath a sheet of tear away.
Here is the link, they post international, I buy also needles here
I have ordered stablilizers from www.allstitch.com for several years. Great customer service and fast delivery!
For a sweatshirt, I hoop a lightweight cutaway, iron a piece of fusible to the inside of the shirt where the design will go. I lightly spray the fusible with fabric adhesive and press to the hooped cutaway. I use wss on top of the sweatshirt to keep the stitches from being lost in the soft fabric. This method has been most successful for me. The fusible helps keeps the fabric from stretching and puckering of the design. Remember it does not take but a VERY light spray of adhesive to do the job!!

I do basically the same thing but I hoop washaway sticky (instead of spray glue to another thing) and float more underneath if a dense design.
I found that if I don't hoop my sweatshirt but use the 'outline' stitch' to hold it in place (hooping only the stablizer) it seems to work well. I use iron on stablizer on the back and wss on the top. also using my 40% coupon I buy my stablizer from Joanns by the bold usually only costs about %15 for the whole bold.
