I wouldn't use it to get designs. I don't accept anyone on facebook that I don't personally know and don't want to get all the spam and junk companies put out.
Facebook is very popular with teenagers but anybody can use it. It is a computer social networking site. You can decide how much of your personal information is open to the public or just you accepted friends.
It's so popular that I found out my nephew was engaged through my kids who were looking at Facebook instead of from my relatives.
No charge. Yes you have to create an account.
Personally, I'm annoyed that there are so many social networking options. Facebook, Twitter, Website Stores. LinkedIn. I say, pick one!
When you create a facebook account (free), you can invite other people with facebook accounts to be your "friend". You can have your page be available for anyone to see, or you can limit the access to your page to allow only the people you have "friended" to see your page. Whenever any of your "friends" post anything on their site, a copy of the post will show up on your site, and anything you post on your site will show up on your friends' sites. This can be nice because you can check your page and see what your friends are up to. For instance, my niece posts new pictures of her new baby quite often, so I can see the pictures as soon as they are taken. If she were to send them to me through email, it would take forever for them to download because she takes alot of pictures. This way I can pick certain ones and ask her to send them to me and it's alot easier. The other nice thing is that I can see if anything special is going on with my siblings. I certainly wouldn't call them every day, but this is a nice way to stay connected and can lead to some spontaneous phone calls. The down side is that some people seem to post the minute-by-minute details of their life, but it's easy to skip over those posts.
Embroidery-wise, I friended Sonia Showwalter Designs because I love her alphabets. When she has a new design ready for purchase, she posts a note on her facebook page. That note then shows up on my page and I know it's time for a visit to her website. Since her post is then on my page, any friends of mine that come visit my page also see her post. That gives Sonia Showwalter some free advertising, so it's mutually beneficial.
So, like anything, facebook has its pros and cons. I've never had a problem with viruses. I tried playing some of the games, but I really wasn't interested in them. I had a friend whose husband was dying of cancer and she would post updates onto her facebook page, which was nice because I could keep up with what was going on and she didn't have to call bunches of people with daily updates and I never had to worry about calling her at the wrong time and waking her husband up. She could post when it was convenient for her, and I could leave notes of encouragement on her page. Another friend was going through an overseas adoption, and again this was a way for her to communicate to a group of people without worrying about leaving someone out or trying to coordinate time zones for phone calls.
So, basically, it's up to you to decide if it would be beneficial to you. If you have a bunch of friends who are on it, it can be fun. If email or phone calls are more your style, that's fine too. Some sites might give you a free design if you add them to your friend list because of the advertising they'll receive from other people seeing their name on your site, but generally there's nothing you're really missing out on. I know this was a lengthy post, but I hope it helps you decide what would be good for you.
Oh my! Thank you, thank you! This clears up a lot of questions I had and was afaraid to ask! :-)

Thank you so much for all this info. You gave a lot that I sure didn't know about.
Yeah, I know this post was a little long, but I thought that giving examples of how it can be used might make it easier to understand. Glad it helped.
Guess I'm just old. I don't see it. My grands sure love it. Also have friends who are on it all the time and play games. Not for me.
I have a facebook account, but I really agree with Betty White, it's a complete waste of time!!
You aren't old! I have had a facebook account for a couple of years and I am 57, my kids won't "friend" me, lol! I keep in touch with my cousins and old school friends and even my Dad is on my page and he is 75. I don't friend companies or people that I don't personally know.
Yes basicaly facebook is just a community site where friends and family share photos and thoughts, its nice to get in touch with old friens aswell , while businesses are now using this for advertising mainly, where embroidery sites may post for instance new sets that are for sale on their site, you are not realy missing out on anything.
I tryed facebook here 3 times and 3 times i got my computer virused up ,so i don't like it much carolyn
Don't click on anything in the posts that you are not sure about.
A friend recently got a Facebook message that was vulgar and inside the message was a line that said, "To stop receiving this click this link." Well he wasn't thinking and clicked it and the same message went to all of his friends and relatives that were on Facebook at the moment.
If it were email he might have realized it was a virus scam right away. But still, he realized it the minute he clicked and regretted it. Just use your common sense like we do with email.
Facebook is free. It's another way to get in touch. It's sorta like having a Yahoo site, which is also free. Facebook was where you can share family photos, find friends and share generally just stuff. Now organizations are adding their companies to Facebook. There may be freebies on their Facebook site. I do have things on Facebook, which I don't get on much, but I have not joined or befriended an embroidery company on Facebook. I have only done that on a Yahoo site. Maybe another Cutie has and can provide further insight. Lots of flowers for you!
