Has anyone else gone this route? I was putting everything on disk when he asked what I was doing. Next thing you know I have more removeable storage then computer storage.

I asked by husband why a hard drive might fail. He told me that sometimes they do but, also they can fail if they are moved while they are running. He's said that any electronics should not be moved while they are running. That was good to know.

I purchased one just for that reason... and external drive got a virus and ate a ton of my folders .. so I retired it and went to flash drives and some cd storage.. I just feel better having the designs stored in that fashion...I have never had a problem with the flash drives. I have all my alphas on one Flash and Cute on one and so on and on.. work for me better and of course I have paper pictures and colors in folders for each flash drive.. we all store what ever works the best right..

Thank you everyone! Since I've read this I've also backed all my designs on disks. It took me 3 years off and on to catagorize, convert and download to disk all of my designs. When I download new designs I start new folders and as I organize them into the original folders I re-copy to disk and it replaces the old disk. I'm glad I asked about externals. I thought it might not be a wise only choice!

My external drive died after just a year and a half. I was devastated. Dont have it as your only backup. I use thumb drives. They do no heat up and theoretically should last longer.

My son bought one for us and installed it. I love it!! We did put him through college with a computer engineering degree! So, if you have to leave your house for a storm just take that with you.

My DH bought me an EHD last Christmas. I use it for all my personal stuff including my embroidery designs. After seeing some of the postings I think I will also back up on CD as well. Thank you for this posting.

what a great husband to do that for you. I bought myself one(500GB) quite some time ago but haven't done the set up yet. I have however finally made some headway on my tons of emb. designs-sorting into to folders & subfolders. I am going to go into overkill mode with them though-I have already burned them to disk and flash drive(s). This way-if something happens to one source, all is not lost. Now to get the ext.hard drive set up and save it all there...... slow process but I would not be a happy camper if my computer crashed and I lost it all ~linda~
P.S. Live and learn-I now don't jump on every free design that comes up and when I do download-I send it directly to the folder for that website or catagory-instead of dumping everything into download folder and saying "I'll take care of it later" later takes 4-ever to sort lol

My DH got me a Terra Byte external drive last Christmas and I love it! I use Allway Sync to do a back up every Sunday afternoon. That is a free program and it is great! The first time I put my some 57,000 designs on back up, (I use a 16gb flash drive)it took 4 hours, now it takes about 5 min! I am sure you will be glad you have one. Hugs, Judy

Judy, can you explain howto use the ALLway Sync? I also have a 1 TB external hard drive that I am trying to put all my emb patterns on, just tried, but not sure I did it correctly - it too 2 & 1/2 hrs to sync 39,079 files but then the analyzing on the next file says 100% but is still going at over 135,000 files? Thanks, Beverly

I have a 500gb ext. drive and save everything fr the comp. and fr my laptop(this one is just for my designs, etc.)
My son told me to get one and save everything as I'd had my comp.crash on me and everything was lost.
I should also save to CD but haven't gotten that far yet.

I think a lot of us have gone this route for good reasons. I think you will love your new gift. I have 1 external harddrive and am looking to connect a 2nd that will stay with the computer.

I use a removable drive (wish it was 750gb - mine is only 80gb) for all of my personal data - including designs. I back up my "extra" critical files to DVD every so often too (as others have said, nothing is 100% perfect).

A few years ago, I purchased an external hard drive to store personal information, as well as my many embroidery designs, from Best Buy. After two months, it quit functioning at all. Luckily, I had all my designs stored on CDs, too. Don't put all your trust in an external hard drive. It is a convenient way to store, but they do fail, too! When I took the hard drive back to Best Buy to see if my designs could be retrieved. They told me that they would have to send it to the manufacturer, and the manufacturer would just send me a new hard drive. Therefore, I opted to just destroy the bad hard drive, as I had personal info on it. Copy your designs to CDs from time to time, to be safer, in case the hard drive fails to operate.

I have one. I put designs on it and also on disc and memory sticks.

With computers, it is always a good idea to have more than one copy of your files.
Personally, I have 3 different copies of my files on 3 different devices. I would really hate to lose my designs and am doing what I can to make certain that does not occur.
Good for your husband... see a problem / fix a problem.
