I just re-read your post. I think that you could make a "cake" block using perhaps slightly different colors or different tones of fabric in strips (for the layers) and use ric-rac between each "layer" for the frosting. Then you could put anything you want on top via applique, embroidery, or anything in your imagination.
I have found more quilt patterns on QuiltersCache than all other sites combined. Browse through here. They are in alphabetical order, or by subject. Good luck. Or you can look by technique (i.e. applique, piecing, etc.) Enjoy.
