Hello,

I bought some Rayon threads, and some of them bleed. Spoils the embroidery, the customers are disappointed. Please help. What to do? Bernadette de Souza.

Hi Bernadette, I find your "letter" to Meganne very interesting. I have a whole load of Marathon Rayon and they do fade specially if you bleach the linens but otherwise have very little problems with it. I have switched to Colorfil which is Poly, which I buy from a very nice Indian chap, who has a Singer agency here in South Africa. The sheen is about the same and the lovely part is the numbering is the same!. this is a great help when I want to convert as Marathon is on the chart lists.
Enjoy the Cute sit where you will get help whenever you need.

In around 1996 when I got my first at home embroidery machine it was difficult to find nice embroidery thread (the hobby was to new at that time) that only the Rayon thread had the nice shine to it. A few years later when the suppliers figured out they could make a fourtune off of catering to use at home consumers they started making a nice Polyester thread. I buy all my thread from Metro, they are nice to deal with and have one of the best prices that I've seen. Welcome to CUTIES.

Hi Bernadette, I agree with the others and dont even own one roll of rayon thread, I only buy poly thread, and while they say rayon shines better than poly, I myself am not able to see enough difference to confirm that. It may shine more on the spool but what difference does it make if it loses all it beauty on the firt wash. Put all the rayon away and only use it for items that will not be washed. The best quality that poly has is its durability on the garment for washing and wearing, it will never look old even when washed in hot water, you can also soak an entire white garment in bleach if it gets stained and never have to worry about the embroidered part changing color in any way, Poly is not only stronger for the wash and wear properties but also for its strength at the machine! The only con to poly thread is ironing, it can be damaged if the embroidery is part gets a direct hit with the hot iron for too long, so always iron the area inside out.

do not like the rayon thread because it fades when washed. I did not have any to bleed. After washing a towel and it faded, and my rayon thread started to break and shred. I quit using it. Try Metro Thread they usually have a sale on and it is very bright colors and do not run or fade. Check out their web site for great deals. So sorry about your bad luck. Embroidery is a learning process and I am still learning. I have learned a lot from other Cuties. There is a wealth of info here on this site. Good luck replacing your thread.

Try returning them. When I purchased my machine they told me up front that some rayons will bleed expecially the darker colors and are not bleachable while the poly will not bleed and you can bleach it daily and it still won't fade. Since I do a lot of stuff for kids this was good to know.

Rayon threads are for items you would not wash, they tend to bleed and fade when washed, they do look so much brighter then the poly.

Hi Bernadette.
Have you had the threads too long to be able to return them?
Because I don't think there is much that you can do to stop sewing threads from bleeding.
If it was a garment you could wash it in very salty water, that is the old remedy, but threads still on the spool would probably not dry successfully if you soaked them in salted water.

I'm afraid your only recourse is to contact the supplier or the manufacturer and let them know what is happening and see if they will replace them.

I think it would be good if you also let Cute members know which brand of thread it is, so others are aware before they buy it.

I notice you mention your customers, do you have a website you sell your work from?

I would love to see the kind of things you make to sell in India.

Hugs and roses, Meganne

Thank you, Meganne. I had bought the threads in Bombay, Vyapar threads. They used get the yarns from Germany and packed in India. I do hankies, Photo stitch pictures of Jesus and Mary, frame them and sell for Rs 400 that is for US 8, pillow covers, now christmas linen, also on T-shirts with a logo ' coconut trees with Goa'. I have MC 11000, MC 200 E and MC 9500. The service of Janome in India is very bad. Getting the hoops, foots etc etc is not attended to. In India the seller will go all his way to sell his goods, once the goods are sold, the customer is forgotten, there is no proper training, no maintenance. I have learned myself to do things with the machine and still learning by browsing on the net and with tutorials donated free by nice people like you. Even you pay for the training, there is no training.
Meganne, I am thrill that you have replied my query. I will be more thrilled if I get to meet you in person. I am sounding like St. Thomas. Even getting the proper stabilizer in India is problem, now I have ordered veline from ABC embroidery cost including postage is US 55/-. I love doing FSL baskets. No one in Goa, India is making. For Christmas, I will do some baskets.
I will send you the pictures of my work. Now I am embroidering hankies 7 days of the week with animals motifs (cost Rs 200 for 7 that is US 4.5) Thank you God bless you.

Bernadette it is lovely to hear from you, I love to learn from Cuties from other cultures and it is amazing how we are all so much alike even though we think we are different.

It sounds like you are kept pretty busy with your projects, how do you sell them, in a market or by people telling other people about your work?

I can understand the problems you have with service and supplies. I buy my WSS fabric stabiliser from ABC and I buy other stabilisers and threads from Shoppers Rule and AllStitch Supplies online.
I buy other supplies from different US Ebay sellers. Buying stabiliser and threads in Australia is expensive so it works out cheaper to buy from the USA, the same goes for feet and other accessories.
I only use Robison Anton or Madeira thread now. I bought some cheap threads when I first started but I got so sick of them breaking all the time I decided the cheap price wasn't worth the misery they caused me, so I spent a little bit more and bought good thread. My work is worth it. LOL!!!

You know I also bought some absolutely beautiful hand embroidered Sari edging from a lady on Ebay who lives in India.
They were so gorgeous, I couldn't stop buying and I ended up buying every thing she listed in her first two weeks on Ebay. I love to make doll's clothes and I especially like buying tiny porcelain half dolls and making them into beautiful pin cushions.

Tell me, do you wear Sari's or western style dress?

I would love to see some of your work, you should post it in projects so we can all see it.

Do you celebrate Christmas like westerners do, with trees and Santas and all the other festive trims?
Of course it must be hot there all the time, so you would probably have the same type of Christmas as we do in Australia and never have snow?

There is so much to learn about our different Cute family members, I hope you don't mind me asking so many questions.

I watched the Bollywood movie Bride and Prejudice, I loved seeing all the dancing and the gorgeous clothes. I would love to be able to dress like that and look as good as they did. :-)))

I hope you get something sorted about your threads and if you need links to good online sellers, just ask as I'm sure other Cuties have their favourites too.
HUgs and blessings, Meganne

I would return them to whoever you bought them from and insist on getting your money back There is nothing worse than doing a lot of work and then finding out that the materials you are using are bleeding
