Still shreds/breaks after about 15 seconds of stitching :( I have a Brother SE400 and have LOVED it until the past couple of days. Any advice?

Thank you all for your advice! After smoothing everything and making sure all thread was removed from the gears........I changed the needle and have been embroidering all evening! :)

My thoughts and experience - I have a Brother Innovis 2800D - Was having the same problem a couple of days ago...finally took the whole bobbin casing out clean it of fluff, wound a new bobbin with bobbin thread, changed my needle and then set the machine up to straight sew, no embroidery..everything worked fine on the sample so went back to the embroidery put on a new spool of embroidery thread and everything works fine...Not sure it will be your solution but try it and see...good luck nothing more frustrating I agree...

You may want to have your dealer check the needle hook clearance. I have had similiar problems with shreading thread...no matter what brand! It is extrememy frustrating. Once the adjustment was made, my problem vanished. However, I'm told that this type of adjustment should be checked at least annually with your service...or sometimes it may need to be adjusted more...I'm not sure what causes it to get out of alignment...maybe just wear and vibration...Good Luck!

sometimes a thread gets broken in the top part of the machine. hope you cut your thread at the top and pull out by needle when finished using each color. embroidery machines are different from sewing machines(had to break my habit), repairman told me never pull the thread out at the top. can you open the top and look for any threads? good luck

That's why the saying "you don't know what you've got until it's gone".
Hope you figure it out quickly! Good luck!

I'm soooo sorry. That happened to me once, and it was hard finding the problem. I hope you can fix it soon.

My sewing machine did that once, made my mad.I changed neddles, thresd and took the plate where the nedddle goes down (the throat plate ?)off and cleaed out all the lint. Now I only use brand needles and it works fine all the time. My embro-machine has not seen any other needles after moving in and works fine also. Hope you get it fixed.

Have you checked to be sure there is no burr on the throat plate? I had that happen to me once. Drove me nuts until I took it to the shop and that was what it was. You'll get it fixed and fall in love all over again!

Don't panic. Call the tech at your local store and see if he/she can help. Keep breathing deeply. You will love your machine again.

have you tried using a larger needle? I know my machine doesn't like small hole needles when embroidering, they are fine for regular sewing but when I embroider they just shred to death. I know darker threads tend to shread easier due to the dyes making the more brittle, I would try a larger needle and white thread and see if it happens still.

Once you have checked nothing is caught in the tension discs, cleaned out the bobbin area of lint etc, tried a new needle, tried a different spool of thread, re-threaded top and bottom, then you are at the same point I am..... trying to find a technician who can take a look at it - and I haven't got one :(
