Recently I watched an episode of Dr Oz and he said sage tea was supposed to give relief from hot flushes.

Well, being desperate I asked hubby to look for sage tea when he went grocery shopping. He couldn't find any so he went to the herbs and spices section and bought a jar of ground sage.

Well, what the hey, might as try that, I've always liked sage in stews Italian dishes.

So I boil some water, sprinkle some sage onto it, it barely mixes, but I try and drink it anyway.

It is woeful!!! YUK!!!

So I raid the pantry and find some Bonox (beef extract for drinking or adding to recipes), I mix some into the sage water and guzzle it down.

Two days pass without a hot flush. Hmmm?

I wait three days, suffering through unbearable hot flushes, stripping my clothes off one minute, putting them back on the next. It IS winter here.

So I'll try it again, but this time I get the Bonox out first, make up a drink then sprinkle in some Sage.

Again, two days without hot flushes. Hmmm?

This time I'm not waiting for day 3. Can I find another way to take sage.

My favourite sandwich right now is cheese and Vegemite, so why not try sprinkling some sage on it, the Vegemite will certainly mask the taste.

So far, all night without a hot flush!!!

I will now be eating sage every 3rd day for the rest of my life.

THANK YOU Dr Oz

Ok, I am going to look for ANY form of Sage today! Used PHYTO SOYA capsules for the last month and then BLACK COHOSH root extract plus for 3 days.

I don't sleep at night and counted 6 "power surges" since going to bed last night. Also woke up with a terrible headache, which I believe could be a side effect of Black Cohosh as I NEVER get head aches. Googled a lot and think I will also get some calcium tablets today.

Will let you know ...Please keep your fingers crossed, I can't take it anymore!

After reading this post,I picked 2 fresh leaves, wrapped them in a slice of cheese. Chewed it and went to bed. I have had 2 nights of warm comfortable sleep. No throwing off the bedclothes. Today i will take another dose. I am going off the Premarin, have halved the dose, been on it TOO long, feeling good...Thank you Meganne....hugs. Helen

Great News Helen!!!
I wish I had discovered it years ago.

I tried some Roast Chicken rice cakes, spread with Philly cheese, topped with sliced tomato and sprinkled (lightly) with ground sage and a smidgen of salt.
VERY Tasty!
Now have three ways I can take it and I am pleased to say I have actually been cold and kept my clothes on and, like you, I have been able to sleep all night under the blankets and doona without stripping off. Delicious!!!!

Men do suffer from hot flashes. No joke. My husband started with them several years ago and I told him he was going through menopause. Of course, he just laughed. I think more men suffer but don't say anything. They should! We mentioned to his doctor and it was his testosterone level. He put him on some medication and all was well. Took the medication for about 1 year. Now he no longer takes it. He good now. I myself had hot flashes but felt they were so mild compared to everyone else. Never took medication. I have one occasionally (like every 6 mths) but, like I say, it's nothing like other women have talked about. I'm blessed. Glad to hear there is something so simple as "sage" to help with the problem.

I'd love to answer you all, but the net is sooooooo slow tonight, so I'll just say good luck to everyone who tries this. It really works for me so I'll be trying a few different suggestions on how to take it.

The capsules here are way too expensive to buy, but fresh sage from the garden sounds ok, just have to find my green thumb, it disappeared several years ago, when Mr Ritis arrived to keep me company. LOL!!!
Hugs and roses to all.

PS, would love to hear everyone's results, maybe you all could post them here....?

This is really good news - at least for others. Sage is one of the things I recently found out I was allergic to.
I have been taking evening primrose oil for over 22 yrs. now for other reasons and have not had much for hot flashes - but have to keep our place on the cool side and can't handle the heat - oh how I wish!

That's such a shame, The evening primrose should help though.

Thank you for the info. I'll have to check it out. I get hot flashes but not as bad as some have mentioned. My DH laughs as the clothes come off - of course he'd like to see them all come off! He's not mean about it and very supportive. I have found that at one of our homes, I have less flashes. I think it's because it's so well insulated that it's cooler in temp than the other home. It's been in the 90's and I haven't even turned on the air conditioning and just use the ceiling fan at night. I have noticed that when I have chocolate, I get more hot flashes. :(

Yes, different foods and drinks DO make them worse. I couldn't enjoy my cup of tea without having to strip off within minutes of drinking one.
Tonight I've had three cups and I'm still cold. Wooohoo!
I must go and have my Sage cheese and Vegemite sandwich. :-)

I also hope it works for you, evidently it doesn't work for everyone.
I usually have the pedestal fan at the end of my side of the bed in summer and in winter I find I totally strip off during the night and often end up on top of the covers. It's no wonder we get chills and colds, it has to make us more susceptible to such illnesses when we can't control our body temperature, especially in winter.
Good luck. Meganne

Try a handful of sage leaves, pour over hot water, add a couple of squeezed lemons and some honey. It is actually quite nice.
My sister in law made it for my girls once when they had a cold, and they like it, still ask for it even. We use fresh leaves but I guess dried would work too. It is easy enough to grow anyway.

I'm definitely going to look for a plant to grow, nothing like having the real thing, fresh grown. I'm, also going to plant a lemon tree as soon as we move into the new home. Hugs and love, Meg

They do have the herb in capsules. Should be able to find in a health food store. That way you will be getting the right amount.

You can buy sage pills here in UK as well.

meganne by meganne 19 Jun 2011

I'll have to go search the health food stores.
I'm not really fussed on drinking fancy teas anyway I love my strong black tea too much. (except for my Natureland Nightcup tea, which I really love)

Meg am so glad it works. Funny thing is when you were here on Thur and "stripped off" You forgot to put on your shirt before DH came home. Lucky he has eyes only for ME . Ps saw your sis Janet at Plumpton on Fri with D. Had a quick chat. Freaky with mask over mouth.

Nah, knew he wouldn't take any notice of me, I'm like his sister now, aren't I?

Sissy has a very bad lung infection and can't go out without her mask. I'm surprised she was out at all!!!! I'm very worried about her, she gets sick so often, she is way too thin and needs some meat on her bones to give her strength to fight off diseases.

There is such a thing as being too thin to be healthy and she is proof of it.

Saturday I was all rugged up, neck scarf and all, and didn't strip off once ALL DAY!!! It was fantastic.

How about putting a tiny bit of it in a capsule... I wonder if that would work too? You wouldn't have to taste it.

I'm experimenting at the moment. I put a handful of fresh sage leaves and one Lady Grey teabag (we don't like builder's tea!) in the pot and filled it up with boiling water. It is quite nice.
If you can only get dried sage I can see you running up some teabags with it on your sewing machine!!!!!

Thanx Meganne!!! Personally, I donot have "Hot Flashes" I am just HOT all the time. My husband wears a jacket & cap in the house because I keep it at 62 degrees in here. I have very few friends who want to visit "the refrigerator" as they call my house. Sage, here I come!!! Hugs & Blessings, Judy

Wow thanks you can bet I'm gonna try this! I go from nice to nasty in .01 seconds and sweat like some steel worker. Not very sexy. My dr. took me off the premarin which stopped them but they haven't stopped since and it's been 10 years. I asked when will these stop and all he does is shrug his shoulders - MEN, wish they could sample these along with labor pains, pms and all other joys of womanhood! (giggle)

I am loathe to tell you, but I read a book on Men-OP written and produced by specialist doctors at the Royal Women's Hospital and it stated that what you suffer with DURING, you will suffer with the rest of your life.

I also took Premarin as the only relief I could get, I knew the risks but my quality of life was more important. I am so annoyed that because of the cancer, I not only can't take them any more, but I am on meds to strip all oestrogen from my body. AAAAAAAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!

I have a bush in the garden and, although I don't have hot flushes, I've followed the links below and it has so many medicinal uses I have to try it! Can you grow some to use it fresh?

Good for you! I'm glad that you found something that will alleviate hot flashes!.

Black Cohosh and Dong Quai are also known to aid hot flashes. Someone I know uses them all the time. Though I have used herbs (and like them), I would research side effects before taking anything.
