Fish oil has worked for us. My husband is now under control with his cholesterol. It also worked for me a few years ago when I started taking it. At one time I was taking it in conjunction with Red Yeast Rice but have since stopped taking that. I only like the hot oatmeal so I eat it only in the winter.

Which fish oil has worked for you all? Do you always use the same brand? How much are you using?

The absolute best thing you can do to reduce cholesterol is natural Psyllium husk. In Australia this is well known amongst people who prefer to eat healthy, natural, foods.

About 6 years ago I had high cholesterol and was told I had to reduce it, but back then the only thing I could think I was eating that I shouldn't, was a lot of cheese, which, despite my dairy allergy, I am absolutely addicted to and refused to give up. So I started having 2 teaspoons of natural Psyllium husk on my cereal, or mixed in a glass of apple juice, every day and I haven't had a cholesterol problem since.
Also when Ray's Mum came to live with us she was on cholesterol reducing medication and high blood pressure medication, I put psyllium on her breakfast every day and her annual blood test showed she no longer needed the cholesterol medication.

Due to our upside down lifestyle lately, our eating habits have been pretty bad poor and we've been eating quite a lot of take away, pizza and tv dinners, and Ray's blood test yesterday showed his cholesterol was high, whereas Mum's and mine were both within the normal range. Ray won't take the psyllium despite all my cajoling.

My Sister and both my nieces also take psyllium every day and they all have lowered their cholesterol readings since they started taking it.

Hope this helps you Terri.
Hugs and roses, Meganne

A good friend of mine her dad was in bad shape, nothing worked diet, meds, exercise etc..., doc said he was gonna die had to quite job you name it. He was given this recipe. 2 Heads of Garlic, 2 Lemons, 2 cups of water, puree in blender (important DO NOT remove shins on garlic and lemons just chop up before you puree) and 4 more cups of water, put into pot and just bring to a boil important not to over boil. Strain. Fills a 2 litre bottle, store in fridge. Take 1 oz daily.

The great thing his very high cholesterol lowered tremendously and his doctor was amazed. The wife starting taking it as a sympathy encouragement thing and she said it made her feel better, helps ward off colds, she stopped for a spell and started to feel lousy again. So they both still take it today after 12 years and swears it works. I kept the recipe to pass along, for the day someone in my family may need it.

I hope you find the answers your looking for. Good Luck.

The answers already given are things that do work. I've known of these and of people who it worked for. The thing is to get the right amount for you. Because our systems are all diff. one thing might work for one person but not another.
I also recently talked to someone who uses hemp hearts daily and his cholesterol has come way down. He had had a heart attack years ago and had problems getting it down and then found this.
I have used it when I make my own bread as I grind up some hemp hearts and some flaxseed.

Having high cholesterol and looking for an alternative to taking the meds to lower it I tried a method my cousin told me about and it worked. Glass of red wine, each evening along with a garlic gel capsule and 400 iu of vitamin e. Sounds weird but it does work, but not for high triglycerides.

I have read of different studies in which people who start eating oatmeal or add oats to their diet, lower their cholesterol.

Another thing is Salmon oil, it is said to aid in lowering Cholesterol too... this is something I heard from someone who used it, and I've read it too.

I have heard also, and read that Carrot Juice will flush out the Cholesterol out of the liver.

You might want to google these to verify. There are other things, but I can't remember...

Have you heard of a book called "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" (by Phyllis Balch, James Balch)? If you don't have it, maybe you can see if your Library has it... that book is very good, and has excellent advice. Mine are the older ones.

I hope you can both lower your cholesterol. I haven't had mine checked in sooo long!

Oh goodness! I was forgetting... A friend's husband used Capsicum (Cayenne pepper) to lower his Cholesterol and his blood pressure. And a few years back, the owner of another list, shared with us that her husband was using it successfully to lower his blood pressure. I think that he was taking 4 capsules a day taken all at once in the morning...

We have the same problem in our house and are trying to avoid taking statins for as long as possible. We eat a very low fat diet, and try everything we hear of! Mike's current fad is garlic in brine. He has a test due in a few weeks so I'll report back if it is working!

Garlic is actually really good for that, it even lowers blood pressure. But the thing is... is he taking enough?

spendlove by spendlove 23 Jun 2011

We'll see when he has the next test!

shirlener88 by shirlener88 23 Jun 2011

are these garlic pills or the real stuff?

spendlove by spendlove 23 Jun 2011

The real stuff! The ones in brine in a jar are quite sweet and delicately flavoured.
