Dumb question of the day . . . . How do you tell when a lemon is ripe? They seem so hard now and of course they are yellow (duh) but is there a trick to finding a juicy lemon?

I had one friut on a plant in my conservatory. I did the thing with the microwave and it exploded! It didn't seem to have any juice in it but about a million pips. Had to have the gin and tonic without lemon!

I also have a lemon tree. I just roll them or blast them in the micro for a few seconds. I now see that you have lots of answers.

I have a lemon tree and to me they are clearly ripe when yellow all over. Also to get more juice, cut in half and prick the flesh all over with a fork to loosen it and you will get a lot more juice that way

Just roll them softly a few times like a rolling pin. This will release the juice easier when it's squeezed.

definitely not a dumb question! I have been wondering the same thing lately as I have been using more fresh lemons.

Bev found you a site with the tips I use. I use them in a lot of cooking as they bring out flavor really well.
