I will have to check my local Walmart. The last time I checked, they just had a few notions and flat quarters for quilting. I have never been much of a fan of Hobby Lobby, but they also have fabric.
We have a fully stocked fabric dept. here in Lancaster, SC. They never took ours out. The quality of the fabric has improved immensely.
Wow it would be great if WallMart will sell fabrics in the stores in South Africa that they have a major share in now.
I went to the wal-mart here in Katy,Txs., and they are bringing the fabrics back to, how nice, also the new Joanns its openning about one mile from me, it is going to be a superbig store...:)
Good for you now you will have a choice & if you are a quilter you can apply to Joann's for an additiona 10% off all your purchases.
How does that work? I know teachers get a special card which they get some sort of deal.
If WalMart sells fabric, I just wish we had WalMart here in UK!
The closest Wal-mart in my area, took out its fabric, so I went to Washington across the border to Omak to buy it from that Wal-mart, they too were going to remove fabric from that location, well the staff told me to call the 1-800 # and we were able to keep it in the store! Thank goodness, we have little fabric stores in my location having to travel at least one hour to get to one. Crossing the border can be a pain so I buy lots of fabric when I can and have a stash...lol.
When we hear here that Wal-Mart was going to discontinue their fabric I got the toll free number & gave it to all of the gals in my quilting club 55 of us called to complain & that is why they left it in 1 of our stores out of 3. But they cut the supply by half. Hope they get their their stock back up. Course we now have a Joann's which we did not have & had to go 55 miles to get to one.
Reading all the post one thought comes to mind..."Women of the World Unite and declare'We want fabric at WalMart!" LOL!
I agree. I am sure there were many many woman all over the US that complained to Wal-Mart. Some people live in small towns that do not have fabric shops & if they do have one they are so expensive on their fabrics that one can't afford to sew.
We have two WalMarts within miles of us. One kept their fabric section, and the other got rid of it. Funny thing is the WalMart with the fabric section had its sells go up, and the other lost money. About 2 weeks ago the latter, started rearranging their craft section to start making room for fabric again. Yea! JoAnn's has raised its prices so much that spending money there is like shopping on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.
I don't know where you live but our Joann's is always having a sale & you can also sign up to receive their emails as well as their mailers that have coupons. I also belong to a quilters club & applied for a VIP 10% discount card from Joanns. Here is the link to get the card if you qualify. VIP & Non-Profit discount cards
I see the link is not showing up so you may have to long into Joann's on line & look for the VIP card
I wrote them awhile back and ask that they put fabric back in their stores--they must have recieved many letters on this subject. Makes me happy to know that they have listened to the customers. H&*
I wish they would start handling cross stitch floss again.......
Call the main office at 1-800-925-6278 & tell them you have no place to purchase floss since they took it out of their stores. They took ours out as well but I can find it at Joann's & Hobby Lobby where I live.
I do wish Walmart would bring the fabric back here in Arkansas, at least in NW Arkansas. This is Walmart central ! Corporate office is an hour from me and I cannot count the number of stores within a 50 mile radius!
Go into your local Wal-Mart & ask for the toll free number & call them & ask them if they are going to put fabric back in your store. Or they may know at your local store.
The Walmart here did keep about half of their fabric, and when I was in the store about 3 months ago they had brought in so much fabric and kind of stuck it where ever that the clerks where having a fit about where they were going to put it all...LOL
I hope that happens to our 1 store that kept it fabric. I sure miss having a great choice of childrens flannel for making qults. Ours had such cute fabrics for kids.
Glad lots of you are getting back the fabric dept. I don't know if they'll do the same in Canada. Where I live we used to have 3 places to buy fabric here. We lost all 3 about the same time. We had a Fabricland that closed out as their lease was up and the owner raised the amount of the rent quite a bit - and WalMart took out their fabric dept. about the same time and the little Singer store closed down as the owners retired.
So, it would be nice if WalMart brought back the fabric.
I wonder if someone else will start up a fabric place if WalMart brings theirs back - bring it up to 2!?
There again go into your local Wal-Mart & ask if they are getting their fabric dept back. If they don't know here is the toll free number to the main corporate to Wal-Mart in Arkansa 1-800-925-6278 call & complain. Tell them you have no fabric stores & would like them to put it back in your store.
Well WallMart is in South Africa eventually but I dont think they will ever be like the ones in the USA. Not even the one in the UK is like the ones over there. They have a majority shares in a chain here and you can already see the difference in the stores. Thank you WallMart!!!
Hi Rhoda, I wish we had WalMart in South Africa! We have to buy from specialised fabric stores and it can become quite expensive. Hope you have a super day
Mine in Florida didn't "loose" the department, but cut it down to less than half. Ticks me off. Just hope it goes back to the way it was.
Happy for everyone who is getting it back.
I live in Jacksonville Fl. We have two Wal-Marts within 5 miles. One had cloth the other lost theirs. Went there today and they have brought the fabric back but it is precut in 2 yards bundles. I will not go back there. If I just need a half of yard then I just want to purchase half a yard.
We have 3 Wal-Marts within a 15 mile radius from me. The closest one 3 miles lost their fabric right after they opened the store which made me mad. the one 15 miles away lost their fabric but brought back the 2yd cuts recently. The 3rd store 10 miles away kept its fabric but have half of what they use to. I sure hope they get back the supply they had before because they had many nice fabrics to choose from. We have a Joann's now since last yr so that kind of helped us quilters out here. Quilt shops are just way to expensive per yd.
I was in my walmart last week and they were setting the fabric sept back up I asked if it was going to be all the walmarts and the manager said yes I replied I had wrote many letters to the company expressing how I thought it was the biggest mistake they ever made and he told me they recieved thousands of letters and email to the fact and they are giving in. I am so happy I am a fabricholic and really dont want to go into a 10 step program lol
I use my fabric to insulate my house. Less space to heat and cool--saves $$$$.
Oh! How I love this post! I will have to use this the next time I get a smart a-- remark from my son! Thanks so much for posting this! This is a Cute idea if I ever heard one. Linda
and without all that itchy stuff from the insulation,,,,it may even be green energy saver!@!!!!!
My sewing room & the linen closet downstairs is keeping my sewing room cozy in the winter & cool in the summer. My hubby said I don't need anymore fabric. I think he needs to go look in the garage that he has packed like a pack rat. LOL
nothing here in s. louisiana, still hoping. do have joann and hancocks with sales and coupons, they are 30 to 50 miles away, so don't get there as often as i would like. walmart 10 minutes away. betty
I understand that they are putting it back when remodeling again. My local one just went through a remodel so I guess it will be a while. There is one within traveling distance however, which is nice.
The fabric disappeared from our Kmart stores here in Australia years ago. I used to be able to go in there and pick up my fabric, patterns, jewellery and shoes to match. That was in the days when nothing in my wardrobe was store bought, everything was home made.
The Wal-Mart I went to was in Amish country so they have a huge selection of fabric. However pricing is much better at Joann Fabrics and you can always use coupons, too. Occasionally they do run some really great sales. They received so much inventory from other stores that a lot of the cotton was marked down to $2/yard. Can't beat that.
yes ours started to get some fabric back too. but you have to buy the bolt since they have not put a cutting table or anything else yet.
The WM closest to me never lost fabric. In fact, they were getting new stuff in all the time. There are 2-3 people working the section, and it's neat and they know what they are doing.
On the other hand, the next one down the road-that I expected to lose it, but didn't-is a mess. You have to get a person out of beddings to halp, and most of the time it is the same cranky lady who is miserable all the time. It's up to the management to make the fabric section a desirable place to go. But there is construction going on to put up a super WM that they will move into. We'll see what they do.
Jo
here in my part of florida we never lost our fabric (whew) they have really increased their stock and the quality has greatly improved. Stay away from the 'pre-cut 5 yd bolts', they really are nothing more than starch. If you make something that will never be washed and handled much they are ok but otherwise save your money. Keep your eyes open they will also have a special area where they have free quilt directions and the special fabrics all together. In our wal-mart if you aren't fast you miss out on the directions.
I envy you wish we had a Wallmart store nearby.
In about an hour's time, I can get to at least 6 , going in different directions. Here in NJ and PA.
In the small town I was in about 9 mos ago. We had fabric because of the Native Americans. The town that I am from and live now again Walmart took it out and now is bringing it back. It will have a small supply but at least some of it is coming back to the stores. Good luck for the rest of you. Don't know if our other Walmart is getting it.
Rhoda
Rhoda, that is wonderful - hope you find lots of great fabrics there.
You can read the article at the link I posted. Also, read through other postings and it was mentioned if your store does not get the fabric brought back you need to talk to the management of the store you shop at. If you don't ask they may not bring fabric back to your location.
we still have fabric in our Wal mart in Ukiah, Calif but only a small ammount.
great for you all but not so great for us in TN but when hubby goes to New Mexico in August I will have to get him to look for it......
We have a few WMs in Albuquerque that never lost their fabric departments...if he should come here.
Where in Tn do you live? Dandridge use to have a Wal-Mart that had fabric. New Mexico is a long way to go. Get on the Internet & check for Wal-Marts closer to you or call the Arkansa 1-800-925-6278 corporate office & ask them where there is a store closer to you that will have fabric. I would never trust my hubby to pick of fabric for me. He would come home empty handed. LOL
