Use the differential feed. The more you push it up to the highest point the more gathers you have. The less you do the less you have. Just sew as usual. Suzanne
To gather the fabric for a frill ,set the differential feed to 2- this makes a frill half the length of the original piece eg 10inches becomes 5 inches. Now set the differential feed back to the previous setting.Place the right sides of the frill & main piece of faric together & serge as normal.Hope this helps

I have a Babylock serger. I am assuming (silly me) that it will be similar with any serger. My manual says to use a 4 thread overlock stitch, a width of 7.5, a lennth od 4, differential feed of 2, tension of -. I am assuming that means no tension. Place the fabric under the pressure foot and serge away. To increase the gathering pull the needle threads. for heavy fabris. Or for light to medium fabrics place, use the ease plus method. Place your finger behind the presser foot as you serge. The pressure of your finger should impede the fabric resulting in fuller gathers. Or you can use a ruffling foot if you have one with your machine. You would use a 4 thread overlock stich with the same settings and serge away. Hope this helps. I haven't used my serger to make ruffles yet. But I pretty much copied what my manual said to do.
the-1 means to lower your normal tension by 1 number, meaning if you usually keep it at 3 lower it to 2.
