Well being an annual craft fair seller, I can tell you up front that you won't make what you should. What I've done in the past years is 'charge what the market will bear'. I plan on trying to sell several of my baby alphabet quilts for around $25. Which sometimes sounds to low, but other times to high. I really just to move it out so I can take the money to get more supplies, to make more stuff, to sell next year at the craft fair. I also do plastic canvas designs and they are always received well. Xmas trains, gingerbread houses, etc. Good luck and let us know what you decide.
this is such a good question, and the answers were so very educative. now we each know what our work cost, but i am sure no one can put a price on the love that goes with each project, that make every pcs priceless.
Tanuja, I love your new picture - great to see you. You are so right about that.
I have sold some, but most people do no want to pay the price. I did make $1.50 per 1000 for a couple projects, but you have to take into consideration the project. I had lunch with Diana Cedolia at a sewing event one time, and this was discussed. She did mention, the price per 1000 stitches, and then the cost of thread, stabilizer, and extras. I have not had many that want to pay the price. Some markets are better, but surely not where I have been able to sell much. Hope some of your answers help.
Kim, I seem to remember that price rate a few years back, too. But under the circumstances - you would never get anyone to pay at that rate for FSL would you? So for myself - I have decided upon the hooping of the embroidery - $5-12 depending on the stabilizer, thread, embroidery work involved. Just my humble opinion. Hehehe! *4U Shirlene
what do you think should be the price of a fsl bookmark with 35,000stitches?*
I only do it for friends and usually just charge $5 per word or design
Anyone who wants it, I have a spreadsheet that answers this question VERY well. It takes into consideration everything, equipment, electricity, etc. Email me at pat71896@hotmail.com and, in the subject line, say "cute spreadsheet."
I love doing it so much I hate to charge anything, anything I do is they see something I have done & want 1 like it. I'll charge according to what I feel they can pay but I'm not in the "business" . If it's a business say wanting logo or initials I will charge $1.00 per 1000 sometimes more. I have found a lot of people want something for nothing, when friends pay more than u ask.*4U
Did I make sense? My words r all running together. I must do better with my typing. My mind goes faster than my fingers
I have sold some things… but most I have just sold the project with the embroidery not the embroidery separate. I find some are very quick and easy others are more involved and so they tend to come out in the wash… so to speak. I have just a couple shown on my web page.. www.karikares.com under the link for Picture This ... I would love to hear how others price too!
thanks...that's why I'm wondering if just a flat fee still covers both ends of the spectrum...the easy to more difficult designs.
I would relly like a to know this also. I am planning on selling some items, purses & FSL ornaments for example. I did sell alot of FSL around Christmas to friends and family but I did not charge very much. I don't have any idea what to charge from my website that is currently being done by my hubby. *4u kkcogle for asking this. Thanks.
If any of you ladies have websites, I'd love to see your designs... would you post your web addresses?
www.notions.org.uk is my web address. There will be stuff that wont interest you but there are a couple of links about my embroidered cards.
Good question kkcogle. I'd like to know too. Most of what I've done has been for gifts but I'm making a ton of stuff for our Red Cross Flea Market and would like pricing ideas too. *4U
A Dutch embroidery magazine had a couple of suggestions in their December issue. For small orders €3,- ( approx. $4,50) for embroideries up to 2500 stitches. €1,- or $1,50 extra for every additional 1000. A 50% raise on your 1996 prices. I've never dared to ask that much for embroideries. Fancy 30.000 stitches; would cost a fortune. A second method was to measure length en breadth of the embroidery, divide by 2 and calculate your price on that. They published a table in cm's, but they were for series. 15-50 embroideries 2" would be €3,20, 1,5" €5 and 4" €5,70. But that does not take into account the number of stitches, which of course could vary considerably. And doing 50 of the same is not exactly what I normally do. I am very interested in what others think! Flower for you for raising the question.
I don't sell my embroidering kkcogle, in fact it takes me all my time to keep up with what I have to do for family and friends - for free, haha. But I know some of the others are into selling, so they'll be able to help you. Hugs and a flower sweetie.
What's your website addy? I'd like to look at your designs. ;-)
but that was back in 1996 and I was only really stitching designs under 10,000 stitches on average. Now, it's 2008, gas prices are almost $4.00/gal (ok..what does that have to do with embroidery? lol)...I've invested in another machine that I'd like to pay for...(plus a new Viking serger!)...but I'm embroidering designs with 30,000 stitches. Does anyone have some kind of rule of thumb they use for pricing (just for the embroidery part) that they could share??????? thanks!
