I would like to share a technique with you. I got some free designs this week from www.dianadezigns.com , however this technique works with any simple outline pattern. I did the roses.
The first one looks at an angle, and the second is looking straight on. I chose 3 colors from the same family; Light, medium and dark. I stitched out the lightest color first with the pattern exactly as it loaded
I stitched the pattern a second time with the dark color and adjusted the starting point right .4 inches and down .6 inches. The medium color comes last and has the start point adjusted up .4 inches and Left .6 inches (for a 3D angle look) or up .4 inches and .4 inches Right for a 3D straight on look.
This technique may not work with a pattern that has a satin stitch outline, unless your adjustments are of substantial size as to accommodate the wider outline.
I did two methods of stabilizing, the first, my usual of Solvy Ultra under with stick tear-away applied to the fabric and regular Solvy topping. It did pucker more than I thought it would. I then did 2 layers of muslin and regular Solvy topping. The 2 layers of muslin worked much better and would be perfect for quilting.
My newest problem is with this project I found my thread shrunk a significant amount. I will repost with the results using prepared thread.
This technique works wonderfully in an integrated Color Wheel Quilt.
