Great question! Thank you Loosie! I have oftem wondered the same thing! Never remebered to ask, so now I have this marked for future references.
You can also use the software - my editor (wings). It will show you object by object. You can then "cut" the objects you do not want to stitch. try the free month trial of sewwhatpro. You can cut and paste sections of a design. It is an amazing program. http://www.sandscomputing.com/
I hear Embird can do it but I don't own it.
You can do it in Embird, try it out with the free trial - you won't be able to save the design but can play with the program for 30 days and discover its possibilities.
