if you are doing lace you need to have material behind it, if it is free standing lace you just stitch it on wash away stabilizer. you use the same as if you had material for every 10,000 stitches use another piece.
People use tulle on lace to make it Free standing after it is done they will use a small burning tool to clean up the edges. I find even on some FSL a burning tool helps if you have some threads hanging. It looks so much more clean.

I think that you would just hoop water soluable stabilizer, at least 2 sheets, use the same thread in bobbin as top thread. I see no one else answered, and I know there are others far more experinced than me. I have just done small bookmarks, that christie uploaded in dbc, and they came out great. Also, I have paid attention, that someone said to slow your machine down, if you can , on really dense (lot of stitches) designs.
