Diana's glorious designs made me curious whether anything like that could be achieved in 5D or Embird. Well not quite. Neither program has the same possibilities as the Bernina software.

I made this pansy as a sampler of (some of) what could be done.

For who is interested how I did it:
The flower itself is done in 5D. Three of the petals are done using the Multi-Wave fill - it's a fun feature! - the other two the Radial fill.
I then opened it in Embird and removed the jumps by making connecting stitches. Embird makes it so easy to do that. And made the leaves and stems using Columns, setting the parameters to parallel lines - unless you know you'd never guess they were columns. I'll have to experiment further, but am rather pleased with this 'sampler'.

It was not so much the design I wanted to share but the way I did it. The line tool, fill and column are well-known, it's those extras that differ from software to software and give such unexpected results.

So glad you tried this and posted a picture. I was wondering if it could be done on 5D as their newsletter mentioned a feature that sounded as if it could be done. Looks great!

As far as I can see the new feature is great fun. Have you seen the tutorial on it? You can access it through 'learning center' in 5D Embroidery. It gives great effects, but it's not what Bernina has. As far as I can see the ripple is created in a circular fill and you can't do that in 5D.

Sounds like fun!

mops by mops 22 Aug 2011

Yes, I wish Embird or 5D would have that ripple too. The results are awesome. But, alas, every software has its pros and cons and the ripple seems to be Bernina's only. The multiwave is new in 5D and one of the tutorials on Husqvarna's website gives a glorious design as an example and then goes on with simple shapes, not half as interesting. I'm going to play with it more, that's for sure altho it does not come close to the ripple!

I looked up spirograph and found a step by step mini tutorial from Flying needle on creating spirographs in Embird Studio- I don't have it but it looks interesting.

Spirographs are interesting and you can get great results, but you can't fill an existing form .like a petal, a leaf or a wing with them

Very nice and thanks for explaining the methodology.
Its neat when it creates perspective and dimension giving a 3D feel.
