Today is Mike's Dad's 85th Birthday so I cheerfully offered to host a party for him this afternoon.

I'm not sure how many people to expect or what they are going to sit on and I know I don't have enough cups if they all want a hot drink!
Does anyone want to come round this evening to share the food and wine that is left over?

Well, they have all gone home and the washing up is done. We managed with the cups! I did delegate the cake and the trifle, but Mike and I managed the rest.
Left overs are in the fridge if you want to pop round.
Theres quite a lot of wine.........

Would love to stop by for a bite - will have to pass on the wine, though.

Thanks for the offer Sue, I am shattered after a day on the train to Harlech to see my cousin. Glad the party went well

HMmmm. Looking at that table I wish I could just pop in for left overs. Glad everything turned out alright.

After I have opened my mouth I often think why I did I do that. So yes is the answer. Just make the best of it now, and try to have fun. DeVon

You did it because anyone who makes it to 85 deserves to be celebrated!! Impromptu parties can be great fun, and people know it wasn't planned for months, they'll cope and have a wonderful time getting together with Granddad and other friends. That's what they'll remember, not what kind of cups you had. Your practical mind was obviously on vacation when you made this offer, but it was your heart speaking, wanting to celebrate life! And it will be people's hearts that respond, don't worry.

Reminds me of the time years ago, I opened my big mouth and offered to make a wedding cake. My girlfriend's daughter was getting married, nobody had any money, she wanted it to be special, and I said I'd make the cake. Then I kind of woke up, and wondered where those words came from! I never made a wedding cake, for pity's sake most of my cakes looked like someone had stepped on them before they were frosted! Eeek! But I guess it was meant to be, because it was a 4 layer tier cake, turned out perfect, I even got a piping tube and did fancy swags and stars on the frosting. It was a learning experience. People were commenting about the wonderful, tasty cake even ten years later. Sometimes we have these 'out of body' experiences where somebody else takes over our big mouths, and strange things come out, hee hee hee. Usually turns out for the best, don't worry. Hugs, Marji

Hopefully others will bring some food. I know I would. At least would have ask you when you invited me. Sit? Don't worry about that, if they have to stand they won't stay long! Paper cups with Happy Birthday would be in order. And I also have foot in mouth problems. I can't help it. Just have to offer.

Relax and enjoy the occasion! Some of the best parties and gatherings are those spontaneous with little food and more social mingling! Those that come are more interested in being part of Mike's Dad's special day, than the food and drinks, or a place to sit. We often stress ourselves needlessly! When his dad is no longer with you and Mike, you will be glad you offered and carried it through with a smile and a few sips of wine!!

I can understand what you mean. But you will see some years later, when sometimes people are not alive anymore; you can think back on this day and you will get a nice feeling that you did this. You never can have enough family days like this. Enjoy and just let things go its way. For every little problem ('cos who cares if you have to wait for a cup) there is a solution. Wish him a "Gelukkige Verjaardag ! " => Flemisch :-)

Yes, but I usually end up glad that I did it. Enjoy the good folks and they will find where to sit and enjoy your yummy food.

Wish your dad a happy birthday and I wish you a happy and relaxed day as well. Hope your guests are not too old to enjoy a party standing up. Here it's not exactly a "let's celebrate in the garden" sort of day. I hope your weather is better so your garden furniture can offer some more seats. Anyway: enjoy!!
Can't make it tonight for the leftovers, sorry :)

PS. Yes, I often wonder why I offered to do something; me and my big mouth!!

LOL! Oh yes and then I drag my feet and only make it worse because its usally something I've never done before and don't know where to start! It always works out in the end and I learn something new, but I let it get to me in the beginning sometimes. Good Luck and have fun!!
