After reading starlizards post about buying variagated thread she finds she has no use for my question of the day is this. What have you bought you thought you just had to have and now find you have no use for? I bought one of those knitting machines that you turn the handle and it makes a long tube. Used it a couple of times now it resides in the closet.Had to have the Clover flower frill templates to find out they weren't what they were cracked up to be.Gave away 1 set and still have another. Your turn. Share your oooooops with us.

I had to bring this up for another go, I'm just cracking up at the answers. Been there, done that, oh, yeah. Apparently I never coveted a Magna Hoop, because I think magnets strong enough to hold material would be the kind of magnets you shouldn't get near your computerized machine. Didn't sound like a good thing to me. And several other things I didn't covet, because I never heard of them, and still don't know what they are. Oh, the egg peeler, hee hee hee, I did pass on that one. I figured I wasn't enough of a yuppie for that kind of gadget, I'm more the "tar in a can" type where the guy builds a rowboat out of a screen door. I'm going to send for it, I have a leak in my roof. And who knows, there may be an occasion where I need to build a raft out of my screen door, if I'm not on the list to get the latest "Ark" memo. My cousins in Harrisburg could have used a boat last week, rather unexpectedly and quickly. Anyway, Bev, loved your post!! Hugs, Marji

OK, Bev....just one of a slew....I have a bag of beautiful wool roving that I intended on dying a spinning into yarn (with a little hand spinner) and this bag is the size of a kitchen garbage bag....I have dyed and spun about 1/8 of a ball and said "no wonder they charge so much for yarn" and have had the bag for 2 years in storage..........

I have a hoard of material that I finally managed to stop myself from buying more (all those newer patterns that are soooo pretty) that I just have to have - I have enough!!!! The last time I had done that I used from it all the time, but was also buying a little bit here and there when it was on a good sale. When my first hubby passed away I couldn't afford to buy material and was glad of my stash which I really used a lot of and after 10 yrs. I finally had a job where I had a little extra and started buying material again - hence the stash I now have. I didn't renew my membership at fabricland to help me to not buy anymore. But when the local one closed out I kind of went overboard and bought a bunch of material at such exceptional sale prices - now there are no material shops locally.
I have a stash of yarn that I slowly use (I have way too much) - of course again couldn't resist such a good sale (a closing out sale!) I also have way to many zippers in many colors(again I found a closing out sale).
I have way too much ribbon. I have so much I'll probably never use it all! But you know how it goes when there's a good sale! I got a lot of them for a $1 or some at 1/2 price and some I got at yard sales with other things I did want.

THE ANSWERS HERE HAVE GIVEN ME A GOOD LAUGH FOR TODAY! I'm guilty of trying some of these items.... but I have to say.... Right now I have embroidery designs that I know I will never use! They are easily deleted, but........what if I need one of them someday? ha ha

I won't list anything, because I don't want to slow the site down again, hee hee hee. Reading this post, though, I wonder if there's a way we can have some kind of "swap shop" amongst the Cuties, because your junk might be just what somebody else was looking for! Maybe we could start a thread over on You Embroidery, because it won't work here at the Cute site, things bounce around way too much. Thoughts, anyone? And if they're 'bad' thoughts, that's ok, too. I was thinking just for Cuties, not for businesses to post sales & stuff, but just for us to trade among ourselves, no "outsiders", no ads, just a Cute yard sale. Hugs, Marji

That's a good idea, but with the postal rates being what they are these days, you'd be spending even more money to mail whatever to whomever. I live in Canada and the postal rates here are outrageous... even to the states.

bevintex by bevintex 13 Sep 2011

I like this idea. One Cuties mistake might be just what another is looking for. postage would be between the buyer and seller. I have 2 listings just to start.

marjialexa by marjialexa 14 Sep 2011

Yes, postage is outrageous everywhere. But buyer or recipient would pay postage if they wanted it. I'll look into this idea maybe tomorrow (Thursday)

I just had to have a quilting frame. My daughter and granddaughter worked very hard putting it together. It takes up the majority of room in my spare bedroom, I have never used it! I've had it for about three years, just sitting there, taking up space! LOL

Hi Bev - what a great question!!!!

After reading all the answers I will now no longer hanker after a Megahoop (that didn't get a very good report at all, did it). I'll just concentrate now on a 150 Hoop-It-All so I can do lots of Veronika's designs without downsizing them. I just have to have a 150 Hoop-It-All.

Oh, yes, and I have to try leather gardening gloves on my next quilting venture. (Note - get some really nice gardening gloves next time I go to the shop.)

At one time I frequented the local Sunday auction and went mad bidding and winning large dessert serving bowls. Now I have so many they're an embarrassment. Oh, and cup and saucer sets, and my daughters don't want any. Just gave 12 sets to the recyclers last week. Could have made cup pin cushions from them but the cups were kitchen ones and not pretty at all.

Did anyone mention knitting yarn??? It's so easy to go into a store and see yarn on sale and say to oneself, 'My goodness, what a bargain. I'll get some of that knit ??? a sweater.' Then you get home and have to do the normal routine housework and the yarn gets stashed away out of site.... and so the next time you go into a store you see Yarn on Sale....

Forget about the fabric!!!! Of course, I have a use for it all - I just don't have time to find it all...... :{

Alma I had to chuckle sounds like me with the yarn. I have 2 knitting machines and a closet full of yarn in individual dividers and now overflowing into bags.
Plus an electrical spinner and fiber; I even have an entire shearing from a new zealand lamb our local fiber shop imported for our spinning class.
Plus tons of fabric in my craft room holds
all my hobby stuff.

Oh My Goodness - I forgot about the four spinning wheels, bags of wool ready to spin (we shore our own sheep at one time and I stashed the best bits away, dirt and all). We had a little Perendale Stud.

marjialexa by marjialexa 14 Sep 2011

I want sheep!!! But I really want a cup & saucer, bone china, with roses. Late mother gave me one, it broke, smashed, like to replace it.

Useless purchase. I try very hard to buy only what I will use, but sometimes fail. I bought a set of those quilting grippers in the U shape that has little handles on each side to hold the fabric flat while doing quilting. I got frustrated with those and found that a pair of leather gardening gloves does a much better job and is less tedious. The set that I bought is in a box to be sent to my daughter, who is just getting started with sewing and wants to give them a try.

THe magna hoops, i do not like it limited my embroidery area less than 5x7, I asked that question before i bought it, the response was not you will be able to embroider 5x7 designs, and it was not true, very disapppointed for this, I was allowed to return it but well, it is there somewhere in my closet.

katydid by katydid 13 Sep 2011

I use mine. Not as much as I had anticipated tho. I did not buy the software for the hoops. With the software, I suppose you could check the design to see if it clears the metal insert. Sometimes I use them for my toilet paper holders, but then I discovered fusible sewing is better.

I wouldn't know where to start in listing all of my "Why did I think I needed this?" purchases. Honestly, I don't do it very often, but, my husband is way worse than I am about it. I try to maintain the mantra: If I can't eat it, wear it, or hide under it, I don't need it. LOL! Of course all that goes out the window when it comes to embroidery.

Additional comment:
The very last thing that I've bought was the Corel Paint Shop Pro X3 graphics program. I already had the X2... thought upgrading would be nice. Yeah, I went back to the X2 after about a week of using the X3.

marjialexa by marjialexa 14 Sep 2011

We need to talk about this Corel program, seriously. I only have the basic "Paint"--what does this one do? I can't even figure out how to "crop" with Paint.

babsie by babsie 13 Sep 2011

Is that the one with the magnets? I have the Bernina Deco and it takes the Magna-Hoop B, but the Bernina dealer sells it for R1300 that is US$176 and it was advertised last week on the net for US$90 and that is R665, but I do not want to order it if it is not worth it, way too expensive. Any suggestions?

I have bins and bins of material I just had to have! I just don't have enough time to use it all. I have to stop myself now when I see some material I think I have to use. I have restricted myself to certain colors I don't have now. Its helped me cut way back on how much material I buy and don't use, lol!

My "useless" purchases are all very useable, I just don't seem to have the time to use them anymore. Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) is a paradise for crafters, and because I couldn't drive (we used limosines & compound buses), I spent many, many happy years shopping for crafty things. I own a huge box of paper punches (not used much) a huge box of paper stamps with inks & embossing powders (not used much) so much ribbon and beads I could open my own shop!! I can't get rid of them cos I cannot afford to buy them again, so I suppose I am going to have to try to limit my time on Cuties and MAKE SOME CARDS etc!!

I bought a Hoop-It-All for my Bernina...my dealer was trying to get rid of some of her older stock an gave me a great deal. Took it out of the bag a couple of times to look at but never used it. Sold it on Ebay a while back with some other things to try and pay a Dentist bill. I did get more than I paid for it :) But I did resist buying an extra large Hoop-It-All she was trying to sell me at the same time.

I guess mine would be books-just love them. I used
to go to Borders or Barnes and Noble and just poor
over crafting, cooking, gardening books. Every new
hobby needed new books-LOL definetly addicted to books. However, I have learned to wait and research
before buying the best book on a particular subject
and not just eye candy. Also, going to library and
getting the book before purchase to see if I really
needed it-its made a difference in my library and
pocket book. Also, I used to get all the knitting
magazines but now I'm very choosey.

The Mega hoop for the Husqvarna Designer Diamond. After I bought it I discovered you have to split (large) designs into two and stitch each side separately, anyway. Several people I spoke to said it never aligns the two sides properly and I would be very disappointed so I just haven't bothered to even try it. What a waste of money!!!!

Yeah, dealers sell them, but sometimes neglect to mention that little fact. Your machine will sew a design no larger than your sewing field, no matter hoop size.

I would have to say the rotary cutter by simplicity, had to have it LOL tried it out and I really don't like it, material feeds crooked so I don't end up with that perfect strip I was looking for now it sits in it's box under my sewing table, also bought the bias maker which if you don't purchase additional parts is usless too, I finally bought the right parts hoping to use it and still haven't LOL but I think I will end up useing it eventually LOL

Christmas is coming up. Wonder who would like a bow maker! What makes me laugh is those tv infomercials. Have you seen the eggies? The new way to boil an egg. It seems the old way to peel an egg is just too hard. Now you boil it in the eggie and end up having to wash the thing. But wait! Order now and get 2 sets. Funny.

Definitely PE design next, I apparantly needed it to split designs for the large hoop 14"X 16"or 360mmx360mm I am not sure what I was thinking because I have not used the large hoop, can't think of anything I will us it for, and I don't like pe design next as a digitizing program. Rather expensive unneseccary purchase.

Just crafting things or even something from the kitchen (there I have more on my plate ;o)?
The first "embroidery-machine" I bought was that little egg from brother E100P. You can stitch single patches with Disney-designs and put names in it but it has no bobbincase so you have to iron a lamination at the back to avoid that the thread slippes out of the special-patches you have to buy. For somebody like me who never touches a flat iron without really necessity this desn't work.
I'm curious what the other cuties stockpile in their homes ;o)
Greetings, Bettina
