I've only rewound them, but this is an excellent question and some interesting answers - thanks!
I would just like to say 'thank you' for coming back to us to comment on our comments. Nice!!!!!
I don't use pre-wound bobbins. However, I asked my dealer what people do with the empties, they get returned for a discount on their next purchase of bobbins. The returns go back to the manufacturer for re-winding.
My dealer does take them and uses them in his store, gives a discount on purchasing more pre-wound bobbins.
I normally use the prewound, and wind when I want a color to match the top threads. My Viking machines will not rewind the prewound empty spool. I do not care for the cardboard sided bobbins, nor the side less ones. Mainly because my machines don';t like them. But, most of my empty bobbin spools are disposed of. It would be good to know of a place that could use them....I went through 4 in doing my last project.
Do you have any recycling programs in your area ? Perhaps you could dispose of them there ? . ? ?
I reuse the empty plastic ones when I need bobbin thread to match the top. They are great for sewing too. I have given several bags full of empties to neighbors who sew. They like them too. I have some bags of empties now that will go to the Salvation Army store.

How do you rewind the used prewound bobbins? I have tried with size "L" and a sidewinder, but they do NOT come out right. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Bonnie
There is a group that will take your empties or near empty bobbins, and rewind. They teach special ed children sewing and embroidery. I will try to find the address for everyone....my computer crashed with the info. Will post when I do a search. DD
I will post in my lists, because I can't seem to find the right search words to find what I want
I just started using pre wound, so I do not have a large collection yet. But my plans are to save them and use them for Bible school crafts. Don't know what they will make out of them, but I'll bet something CUTE!!!
Thanks for the info! I have a bunch of pre-wound that I got off craigslist I if I could find them I think they would be useful to me now! They are cardboard so I assume I will recycle them! Live Laugh Download Stitch!
I do use prewound bobbins and i reuse the plastics ones for FSl projects to mach the color they are very handy .Maria
I use magna glide. They are sideless and have a small magnet on one side of the core. It prevents overspin and you end up using all the thread no waste. Then the company gives you a small envelope to mail back the cores. they give you 3 bucks towards more bobbins. No waste as they reuse them. Added bonus is you get 3 dollars towards new bobbins. They pay for the postage too BTW Suzanne
Suzanne ....WOW !!! Will these work in all machines ? I have a Designer 1 . Is magna glide the brand name ? Where do yuo get them from ? Thanks for the info !
Jo
I got 2 gross of cardboard sided prewounds with my 4-needle machine. The cardboard goes into the paper recycle box, small as they are; the plastic core is saved for my granddaughter to play with. I have ordered plastic sided ones from Shopper's Rule and am looking forward to those. Am very curious to know if I could reuse those for my Ruby.
Hi there
since using pre wound I must admit would not like to go back to doing my own..my pre wound seem to last for about 60,000 stitches versus my own wound about 20,000, I use sideless and topless so im left with a tiny little core.. which my daughter collects and threads with wool to make bracelets, keyrings ect.. she puts them in her craft box lol..
Big hugs from London
Maria xx
Hi Maria, what a nice way to use the cores ! I bet your Daughter makes beautiful things with then !
I reuse the plastic ones I buy all the time to wind colors for FSL and satin stitching. No problems at all.
Hi Jo, with my PR the bobbins stitch out to empty and I put the plastic bit in recycling. I have thought to save and do something 'interesting' with them. My Galaxie tells me the bobbin thread is running out, if I let it get too low it wobbles and gives wonky stitches. I save all these bobbins and have a session where I do a rewind onto the Brother bobbin. I have used the thread for tacking stitches in the past
I always use prewound in my embroidery machine and then use the blanks for other threads for normal machine ar when I want the same colour thread as the top
I love the prewound. The ones I buy here in SA are plastic and the sides are cardboard. When finished they go into the recycle bin.
The pre-wound bobbins I use are plastic and I reuse them like normal bobbins. Works for me.
Good question, I also wind my own, I did buy prewound here in SA and I dont like them at all.
I have never tried them, hence the question.. I have always just wound my own.
Jo, I do not use pre wound bobbins - but I often wondered what they do with them, too.
Hi Shirlener ! I was very curious about them, have seen where many use them. I did not know that some could be rewound.. I learned so much.. glad I asked the question ! LOL !
Janome prewounds are on their normal bobbins. I got a few packs because I figured that I needed bobbins and may as well get them with thread on them :)
janome empty bobbins are 65 pence each. 8oom metres bobbin thread is £6.50. Pre-wound bobbins (re-usable) are 12 for £13.00 and contain 95 metres each, 1140 metres (equivalent to 1 1/2 reels at £6.50. To cut the maths short I save £4.00 by buying pre-wound bobbins and still have the plastic bobbins to use on any of my Janome machines. Hows That?
So far I have been using them for the FSL projects since I have to have the bobbin in the same color as the top.
