You need to use the 'save stitch file' icon, not the one to the left of it that only save the design file as can. Have a look at the examples in your manual and/or the list at the end of the manual.
I had 3D, skipped 4D and now use 5D. The manuals of both 3D and 5D use several embroidery designs as examples and the method for saving can-files on the one hand and embroidery files on the other have stayed the same, so I bet 4D is no different. The screenprint is from 5D. And as you can see I set my 5D to Dutch.

I hate to see comments cut-off without a warning!
If you already have a can file, can't you convert it to stitches? I don't understand.
4D when I save the file does not give me an option of saving it with any other file extention.
I open the .jpeg in 4D design creator. go through the steps for stitches. When I am done and need to save my work, it is my only option.
I am confused too, which is why I probably need someone to do this for me.
From your description you are saving the design from drop down menu from File. But there is an icon with abbreviation 3D in upper left corner. If you open it you can see your design in additional window, number of stitches, height, and width. On the bottom of this window with your design you can see the option save, copy or cancel. If you click save, then you will save in whatever format you have chosen for your software. You can also copy the design, bring it to 4D embroidery and save from here. Hope it helps, Anna

anna this did help.
I had been doing all those steps, but when the extra window popped up had not been saving my work using that command in that window. Thank you.
I am double checking it and will now do a sample stitch out.
Thank you
raingade, it is recommended to save files in both ways. .can and other format, like .pes that you are using. You can always open .can file and make adjustment in Digitizing later without loosing all your work. Anna
I can help with the digitizing, but not sure what a can file is? Would need it in a picture format. Will send you a PM with info.

The .can-file is the ditised object file before it is converted to a stitch file, like the .eof-file in Embird.
Click on "community" at the top of the page and then you will see "private", which is where the PM's are that people have sent you.
