I just read this article by Lindee G. It is a long read but I totally agree with what she is saying.

I never had a clue about what it takes to do a set of designs to put on the Web to sell. What an eye-opener this article is. It gives new meaning to word "Freebie" and makes me appreciate them even more. Thank you for the link. Have a great day.***

Yes, this article should shed some light for those who don't have a clue as to what it takes. I know I don't know all, but I do realize it's a lot of work, etc. and I appreciate all that is done for us whether it is free or not.
It is that same as doing the embroidery on something and giving it as a gift - you have put in a lot of work, time, and supplies into it - but it is done with love of what you are doing.

I have to add my two cents. She hit it right on the head about digitizing. I don't have a website yet because I know what it takes to run one and just don't want to invest that much time or money into one yet. All designs that I have uploaded to site yes has been created and digitize by me. And I won't upload a design until I have stitched it out. And I do believe in working out all of the bugs before it is uploaded which takes time. What most don't know is I have been digitizing fsl for over three years now. And I feel I can always learn more and push myself to do so. This has been my way in sharing in the sisterhood of like minded embroiders. And now with Christmas coming I will be uploading some designs for all do have fun with soon. Just as soon as I finish stitching out my fsl lampshades.
Hope everyone had a Happy Halloween. Happy stitching

I just a newbie, but I know it takes alot of knowledge and skill as well as talent to digitize. I do appreciate those who do and do it well. I have seen some really bad designs but most are wonderful and well thought out. I can see why designs are sometimes expensive. I do love great freebies but I don't mind paying for something I really like and is well done. Hugs! Patsy

Good article! And I bookmarked it to go back to and read again. I've been teaching myself how to digitize for the last 3 years and I've learned a lot... but I am by no means, an expert. I can't tell you how many times I've downloaded a freebie set of designs, only to delete them after getting them opened up in my embroidery program. Such a big waste! Simple 1 or 2 color designs that are covered in jump stitches... seriously? I'm just a novice digitizer at this point and even I know that there needs to be order to the chaos. I'm really picky about the freebies I download these days. I don't mind paying for good designs that have been thought out and planned to as close to perfection as possible. Embroidery designs are definitely one of those things that you get what you pay for... most of the time.

I totally agree. What I found revealing is how few people have an idea of the time spent on digitising a good design. Even without the hours necessary to put it on your own website it's so much more than non-digitisers think. I found the acticle on redwork just as interesting, it may look simple but pathing isn't.
I never understand why people are complaining about not getting enough freebies - they are costly gifts.

I too, agree! I haven't read the whole article, but I know that she is right. I am not a digitizer but I appreciate what the digitizers do!!!

And that is why I leave the digitizing to the experts. I do admire all those digitizers that we have on this site. Marg

Good article on making of a design to get ready for selling and the time involved in the process. That's why more of us don't digitize for profit.
