Secret Santa recipients (which means all of us in the SS)

I have a questions that beg answers.

My reason for asking is quite simple, if a Secret Santa wanted to make a table runner for her Secret Recipient, how would she know what size to make it?

SO>>>>>

What kind of dining table do you have, round, oval or rectangular?

And what size is the table you have?

OH! Do you already HAVE a Christmas table runner that you prefer to use for some special reason?

Maybe you would love one for every day use???

Hugs and blessings, Meganne

That is a tough question. I have a thing with runners. I love to make them , give them away and keep for myself. This happens when I particularly make one I like so much I cannot give it away. I like them in the centre no hanging off the end. Shape does not matter the more different the better. My favorite one to do is the quilt as you go ones. thanks for asking, hugs Lisa

Sorry I'm late in responding - we finally sold our house and the buyers want to be in for Christmas, so, needless to say, it's crazy here (or is that MORE crazy?) I could use any runner up to 72" - Christmas or everyday (blue & white if you opt for the everyday one) Thanks! Hugs and * to all. Deb

OK, I went hunting for our Christmas in July gifts and found these three table runners, all of which are absolutely gorgeous and should help give SS's ideas.

For the benefit of Shuede's SS, I believe she particularly liked the colours of the one in the middle. :-)))

Great idea. I have an oval table that extends from 5ft to 9ft. Year round or holiday would be great.

I would like an all year round one to go on a highly polished, teak, out door setting rectangular in shape. It seats 10 with comfort, I have matching chairs with beautifull jade damasc like fabric cushions, so i guess if I was choosinging i would like something to go with that. Ruth

I'd probably prefer one I could use year round. If I got to choose, probably a tone on tone or more neutral runner. I remember seeing the SPECTACULAR runner in the Christmas in July and, frankly, drooling over it! It could fit a table that seats four or six. Frankly, any size would be great!

Thanks for this question Meganne. I have been wondering whether or not my SS would respond to this. My coffee table is 44 inches by 20 inches. My curtains in the room are burgundy. I am a real country girl and love country fabrics and colours. The second photo below posted by Sewfrenzie are similar to my colour scheme in both dining room and lounge. I do not think that an overhanging runner or cloth on my coffee table would be suitable as it is in a high traffic area and someone brushing past could pull it off the table. I also like items that I can display all year around and not only at Christmas time. Thanks again for the question - it certainly is food for thought.

OK You know what my table looks like. You know the colors i like . R u my SS heheheheheheeee . Seriously this is a good question . I have an oval kind o shaped table. Handmade by DH. It seats 10 (grandchildren in one sitting). My colors for the dining room are pink burgandy and a soft silver green. Sorry dont know the measurements, too lazy to go out the the sewing shed and get a tape measure. At a guess i would say 6ft. :)

Very nice question Meganne. I do not currently have a table runner and if my SS likes to make that sort of thing I would surely appreciate it (everyday or holiday - SS choice). My table is a 46" by 28" rectangle. I think one for the center section is nice.

Mornin' Meg, my dining table is 45"x 45" (about 114cm x 114cm) with an extension to 60" (about 153cm). It is like a square with the corners rounded! I hope that makes sense. Love Chris

A table runner was also a thought I had. I love your question! I have a 42" round table. A round table runner would be great! My table under the tv could us a table runner that is 14" by 48". LOL

I have a 41" x 76" 6 seater table that I have 3 or 4 table clothes for. I have an oval 36" X 59" 4 seater table I have no table clothes or runners for.
I have a bookshelf that is 13.5" x 37" I have one oval table runner on it that measures 13.5" x 32" I use on it. And I have a desk type table in the entry way that is 20" x 46" with a table runner that is 15" X 36" on it. Both my table runners where made by friends for us when we got married 6 years ago.

Good question - I have a rectangular table. A 48" length is good for me - and probably 15"-18" finished width. I do have runners, but can we have too many? LOL I love them for any season, and for everyday.

My table is a 42" round which extends to a 42 X 66 oval when I have guests. Would be happy with whatever length since I also have an 18" x 96" buffet that could really use some dressing up no matter what time of year.

good question ! : I love table runners ! I have an oval table (1.60 m x 1.20m). But not over the edge...I have a cat you see. And even she is old, I don't trust her, she probably will be playing with the part that hangs over. Xmas desgin or not.. well Xmas designs can be so lovely,.. but the other ones too and you can use it whole year....

My table is rectangular measuring 36x60 inches. I would prefer an everyday runner in colors like beige, tan or soft green and pale yellow.
thanks for asking the question Meganne

cool. thanks Monica. Do you actually have a preference for type?
Over the ends, or just touching the ends, or just for the centre section?

aussiequilter by aussiequilter 14 Nov 2011

My table is one that get heat affected , thats why I always use runner .I dont have one that is the full lenght of the table, mostly just the centre, I would love one the full lenght. My room is navy and country colours.

Meg, that is a great question - I too was thinking of a table runner - but I don't generally sew - so I was unsure of what to make and what size - but I did take a LQQK through some of my recently downloaded pdf files and this is what they say:

1. 16" and the width of your fabric
2. 48" x 24"
3. 49" x 21"
4. 32" x 18"
5. 12" x 38"

My table is round but with a leaf it becomes oval and I like it either way - but only have room for it most of the time as round. I like the idea of either Christmas or a table runner that can be used at any time - I received a lovely table runner that is Christmas fabric - but I have used it other times - just because I enjoy the fact that another made it for me and I love it. Hehehe!

So what would your preferred length be if someone wanted to make you a table runner?
Over the ends, or just touching the ends, or just for the centre section?

shirlener88 by shirlener88 16 Nov 2011

I really think that all of them work on different occasions.

211079
by meganne 13 Nov 2011

I'll Start:

I have a new 6 seater, oval, dining table 68" at its longest point x 43" at its widest point and I have no oval linen at all because I previously had a round table so nothing fits my new one.

The only runner I have is a small round Christmas one that fits my lazy Susan.

Should I be so lucky, I would love anything either Christmassy or everyday.

So, who's next? Come on, don't be shy, it might just be what YOUR SS is waiting for, an idea of something to make for you.

I am terrible at thinking up gifts to make and I need all the input I can get, so I hope my recipient responds too. :-)))

Meganne, you can never have too many runners. I use one on my table instead of a table cloth these days...my table is oblong normal size but extends. But most of the store bought ones fit, doesn't seem to matter if the runner is a little short or hangs over the edges. Hope this helps...Hugs Sally

Oh Sally, I have never had a store bought runner so I have no idea what size they are.
Unimaginative people like me need specifics. Pleeeeeeease, LOL!!!

beatie58 by beatie58 13 Nov 2011

My table is 95cm x 160cm 6 seater, extended another 50cm...the runner I have on at the moment is 35cm x 180cm that is with the table normal not extended...if I was making it I would make is just under the 200cm that would give a nice drop over the table...hope this helps...Hugs Sally

meganne by meganne 13 Nov 2011

WOW! Such variations, I didn't realise you could get so many different sizes.
Are they supposed to hang down over the edge of the table, that sound really nice.
Thanks so much Sally. :-)
