Hi cuties

Not embroidery related, just wanted to show you what I did today with my sister and both of our DH. Made 86 meat pies for the holiday season. I think embroidery is easier. They turned out great and taste delicious. Right now I am BEATTTTT.

answer to all your questions. Pies are eaten as a main meal and traditionally for part of christmas morning breaksfast. They are partially cooked so easily stacked in the freezer. I make so many because I give gifts to friends (WHO ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM) and they are eaten throughout the year for a quick meal, served with veggies or not,

I love pie but I never heard of meat pies. I'm wondering whether I would like them. Do you eat them as a main dish or are they desert? I am guessing main dish.

Aussies eat individual meat pies, any time, day or night. They are available everywhere here, most petrol/gasoline service stations sell hot meat pies like the servo's in the USA sell hot dogs.

Of course the traditional, steak and kidney pudding (pie) comes from Great Britain, and that is our (Aussie's) heritage, but we like to eat out of the hand and not have to sit down with a knife and fork.

Though in winter it is quite common to bake a family meat pie with mashed potato and peas and of course you have to have tomato sauce (ketchup).

I gave MIL a meat pie with cooked mushrooms in butter sauce, the other night for her dinner and even at 92 her eyes light up when a pie is placed in front of her.

I keep a pack of half a dozen frozen meat pies in the freezer, at all times, for a quick meal.

We have annual meat pie competitions here and it is a really big deal to be named number one pie maker. Bakeries, cake shops, hot food take aways, school tuck shops, even hospital kitchens put in entries in the hopes their pies will win the title.

How long did it take you to make all these pies? How many people are you planning of coming to dinner? Will these be eaten on several occasions or one? Where will you store them - until you need them? Hehehe, I am sure noisy - huh?

WOW! You are ambitious! I just got tired reading about it. They look lucious. It's nice to keep a family tradition. My family is scattered all over, and we don't see each others too often to do that.
Hope you enjoy your Holidays. Blessings, Rachel

My mom would make us Mince Meat Pies with meat, raisins, apples, lots of spices and other dried fruits and today I cheat and buy a jar of mincemeat that I put in a crust (I make the crust) and bake. Yours sound yummy.

Never tasted mince meat but these are not at all like that, just meat in them. And yes they are yummy.

shirlener88 by shirlener88 14 Nov 2011

My Mother (Miss Loretta) also made minced meat pies and I still love them - when I can find a good one.

That is absolutely amazing!! I would be wiped out making that many pies too. How do you store them for the holidays? I would be very challenged to freeze that many pies so they came out looking as good as they went in. That sounds really good though. What else is in your pies besides meat? I make pasties, which my husband loves, but I make them about a dozen at a time, and then wrap them up in newspaper to freeze. Good for you, for carrying on a family tradition!!

why do you make so many, and where do you store them?
You must have a freezer the size of a mini van?
I'd be flat out making one, let alone 86, no wonder you are beat, my goodness!

Be it known, that from this day forward Michemb is to be known as "Cute Embroidery's Champion Pie Maker".
Bend down my dear, and receive your official crown.

Congratulations!

:-))) hugs n love, Meganne

Meaganne you are a hoot. My freezer is a normal size and as for the honour of "Cute Embroiderie's Champion Pie Maker", I would love to bend and take a bow however my bodies is aching so much right now I'm afraid I break in half, HA HA. If you were not so far away I would bring you one.

shirlener88 by shirlener88 14 Nov 2011

These pies are made strictly from different kinds of meat, pork, rabbit and moose meat.
It is a family tradition that dates back over a 100 years. I have five sisters and my sister Carol and I are the only ones that continue to make the original recipes handed down from generation to generation. My mom pasted away in August of this year and I had
to stop and take a moment today and remember
all the times we used to make 100 of these at a time when I was younger. We were a large family of 8 so they went fast. Now I give some to my children and I have a long list of friends who wait in line to gets theirs every year. The gift of giving. They are unique, kinda like embroidery. Ha Ha

I have a convection bake oven so I can cook to 9 at a time, but it took 6 hours just to cook them all. Needless to say there were pies everyday.
