I would advise you to start with the free trial of Embird. It is a great program, well worth the money and a month's trial should tell you whether you really would like to get into digitising. Forget about the auto-digitising programs - the results are often very disappointing, unless you stick to very simple colourbook-like designs and know how to perfect them.
Thred is a free program. I haven't had the time to get into it, but there are tons of info, lessons, freebies to check out.

Sophie Sews is a free digitizing program you could try. It does have tutorials also. I didn't give it much of a go so I can't tell you much about it.
Embird is probably the most popular home digitizing program, not free, but very reasonably priced. There are yahoo groups for help, lots of people here use it.
Sophie Sews is onlu partly developed and has not been changed in a couple of years. It freezes by the slightest mistakes, which happens often when you are just starting.
This is a completely free software download for digitizing - though you need to be connected to the internet whilst you are using it. Personally I use Embird, and they have a 30 day trial so that you can evaluate it; there are lots of support groups too...
Where do you get it? I haven't found a place to download it, but would love to try.
Go to the freesierrasoftware.com site -
1. Click on Stitch Era Universal tab
2. Click on Find a dealer tab.
Then complete the required fields and you can download from there

they have some software that is not expensive. I only use Sewcat from them what I use all the time and have heard good things about their other software. They also have some help if needed. good luck edith
Sands digitizing program is more of an auto digitizer, it does have a trial period so you can try it out before purchasing it though.
