Didn't do much hand embroidery before I got my machine, so don't see myself going back to hand.
I might pull out a small design to do while I am not close to my machine. I do spend some time waiting in the Dr's office and I watch T.V. at night after I go to bed. I used to enjoy it alot but my hands cramp and hurt so much now that I much favor my machines! I have one adorable design of a old timey black baby in a cute little dress sitting down with toys around her. It came with several small pictures to put in the frame around the XXX baby. I really want to do that one before I die! I have given most of my supplies to my best friend, Glenda because she loves XXX by hand. I am going to try to sell my Singer XL 1000 locally after the 1st of the year but if it does not sell quickly, I am going to give her that machine. It is in perfect condition, like brand new, and I have was the original owner. I got a BabyLock Esante right after I bought the Singer and them purchased the BabyLock Ellageo about 1 1/2 yrs after I got the other Babylock. It was so much easier to just purchase and collect designs in one format so the Singer has not been used very much. I will play with once in awhile just for the sake of using it but after my surgery and now being so cripple with arthritis, I have become "sorry" when it comes to using any of them. Everything thing I try to do becomes a big issue before I can finish a job! I keep my embroidery very simple but God has not given me enough sense OR I have not used what He did give me because I still collect and buy designs like I was still in the craft business! Every design that I like enough to either download or purchase, I grab it like I have plenty of money to spend and if I keep it up, I will one day wake up and not have money to even buy groceries! hehe I am addicted to collecting designs!!!!!!!!! If I ever get my little Blk girl and the printed pictures done and framed, I will share her with everyone! She is soooo cute. There is also a set(several) of little blk babies on OPW that are adorable! I even got one of them. I got the set on SICK also but they do not compare to the ones at OPW! Mind you, that is not my favorite collectibles!! I want every owl and wild animal I see! I could not stitch all of my designs if I lived to be 200 and I sewed all day everyday! I am not kidding when I say I am addicted to collecting! Linda
Thanks for sharing! Yes, collecting is always a hobbist fight. I LOVE shoes...well a girl can NEVER have too many shoes!!! :) My cousin collects little black people and I am the angel collector. Linda I pray you much healing in your body that you will be able to continue your love for your craft. Thanks for sharing and continue to be encouraged and this group does that VERY WELL!!! Many BLESSINGS too you ;D *2U
NO or should I say yes after I find a way to use the thousands of designs I have collected lol
Very interesting questions and all the answers so far. I haven't done much hand emb. in a long time, but prefer ME since I discovered it a couple yrs. ago. It facinate me as it is stitching out - I am amazed as it goes along creating such lovely things!
I might do a little hand emb. if I had something I wanted done diff., but will pretty much stick with ME. - I'm hooked!
Yes, There are still things I can't do on my embroidery machine due to my limited hoop size. Hand embrodiery is great for crazy quilting also and long rides to pass the time also.
:D
Diane
Thanks Diane for sharing...How long does it take to hand emb, mins, hrs, days, weeks, etc.? TIA ;D *2U
I still do counted cross stitch, but I never did much hand embroidery anyhow. Your Red Riding Hood is lovely.
Guess I've never grown up. I even have a LRRH spoon and fork set. Use the fork for olives and the spoon for jelly.just loved the story, Urban Designs has a new design but I just omitted the wolf.
I can't. But would mix the 2 if I could. Couldn't understand why my needle came unthreaded all the time when I did hand stitching. Then realized I hold the thread with my pinky finger as I pull it thru & my pinky doesn't meet my hand anymore when I bend it down! Thank goodness for machine!!
Without my machines I would be naked...honestly I make 99% of my clothes ;D *2U
I sewed my first wedding dress for someone at 19 yrs old. I made all of my Mom's clothes for the last 20 yrs she was alive. This was a lady that shopped at all of the high end shops$$$$$$ and until I made her her 1st pants suit, refused to wear slacks! That was all she wore after the 1st suit! I made her about 10 outfits every 3 months for very close to 20 yrs. She did not even pick out the material. She would call me and tell me to go get some new material and patterns and make her some new clothes, or to use this pattern or that pattern(one that she had enjoyed wearing alot). Her size did not change in all those yrs until close to the end. I need to get busy and make me some new outfits but my concentration is not so constant with the pain now! I will make my slacks and buy plain shirts and blouses and put the embroidery on them. I do make all of my outer wear except for a shirt or blouse once in awhile.
WOW...sewing has been passed down from many generations...I hope one of my littles cousins become interested ;D *2U
No. I love watching my machine create beautiful designs. I also have OA in my hands.
God bless
It's good to have a machine that does the hard labor...I pray continously healing for your hands and the unknown areas of your body ;D *2U
I have so much X-stitch that I have been given as presents. I am sure that I will never do them. I just love machine embroidery.
I never learned how to hand embroidery, but I fell in love with a friends machine and just had to get one
Hugs

Since I leared how to lace cards (many moons ago LOL) I've loved hand embroidery and I've got a pile of pillow cases to prove it :). Now that I'm older and the eyes are not as sharp as they use to be I'm hooked on ME, that doesn't mean I won't give hand embroidery another try.
I still do embroidery by hand very relaxing, great for little projects perfect for when I know I have all day at the Doctor. But The machine is so MUCH prettier and faster.Of course some designs are NOT available for machine.
Thanks for sharing...I was looking at some hand embroidery today and admired it, period...I usually take a puzzle or my netbook sometimes to docs visit ;D *2U
I'll have to post my Little Red Riding Hood quilt here.(If I ever figure out how to make the photo smaller)It's all in embroidery done by hand.
Yes, but not exclusively. There's a place for both and I find hand embroidery very relaxing. The machine can do so much more than my hands can do these days, like large designs and lace, but, to me, nothing looks quite like fine hand-stitching on baby clothes.

I would like to do hand embroidery as well but am unable to hold the needle for any length of time so i stick to machine embroidery, but still miss the hand embroidery1
ho no, now that I'm discovering all the nice things you can create with a machine... Love this toooooo much :-)
It is a completely different ball game. I spend more time embroidery by hand than by machine. Probably because it takes so much longer to get results!
I love the beauty of hand embroider but I can say I came in the era of the machine ;D *2U
I do both. I can't do machine embroidery in the evening since my machine is is in the basement, so I do stamped and counted embroidery in the evening. I both give me different kinds of satisfaction. Maureen
Absolutely! There are some things that just look better in hand embroidery, Brazilian for instance and 3D. There is just something special about the look of hand embroidery!
MJDG
I just posted a pic in projects of Brazilian emb.
It doesn't show up well but it is all 3D with raised flowers.

Thanks for sharing...I have not been exposed to hand embroidery much but I do love the beauty of them ;D *2U
No, would not go back. My eyes and my hands just can't do that kind of work anymore.
Since I like sitting by my husband in the evenings, watching TV, I think the machine would be too heavy to hold in my lap and the noise would be a problem, so...yes, I would go back to hand embroidery sometimes. Right now, I do hand quilting which I will never replace with a machine.
Thanks for sharing...I keep saying I am going to try to quit a mini something for beginners ;D *2U
depends, it is the same with hand or machine quilting, some project aford his and others that but i love to ME
Not even on a good day! I know that there are some that thumb their noses to ME, however I feel I can be much more expressive with this media than any other. Live Laugh Download Stitch!
Thanks for sharing! Isn't it fun to be able to EXPRESS YOURSELF through ME, etc...I am dangerous with a piece of fabric and some thread, LOL ;D *2U
Good question...I guess if I was out somewhere that I could not have my machine with me and getting that embroidery itch, I would do some hand embroidery..it is very relaxing but time consuming..one thing though, more great designs for machine embroidery... so choosing is debateable...lol
Thanks for sharing...indeed the selections of designs keep you interested...FIESTA ;D *2U
I have been machine embroidering since 1993 but are still doing hand embroidery, although not as much as I used to. I love it. But I like the fast and sometimes spectacular results ME offers.
WOW, ME since 1993 and I just got my first machine in 2007 and had a feeling something like this would happen...HOOKED ... FIESTA ANYHOW ;D *2U
I didn't get an emb machine until 2004 when I had to replace my sewing machine. Until then I didn't know machine embroidery existed. Wow, I missed out on a lot of years
Clawton, I remember having a Singer Quantum XL-1 that they called embroidery designs but it was actually stitches ;D
