I'd think I'd be inclined to 'hide' the item somewhere, maybe way at the back of the display, and go back next day to get it, unless, of course, it was something like a BBQ or a bicycle.
AlmaG.
I'm just reading this a day late and hope when you went back the item was still available to purchase. I'm like you and would think they could at lease hold an item for 24 hours before returning it to the shelves but I don't know the policy.
Here in SA we have what is called layby. As far as I know there is no charge as long as it is collected and paid for by a certain date. I have never used the facility.
Sorry you got frustrated, but stores doing layaways usually charge a percentage of the purchase upfront to be sure you plan to actually come back to get it after they have held it for you. If they did not do that many will decide later to just forget about coming back to get it after putting it on layaway, so the store loses having an item not out for sale, but back in layaway sitting.

I am so sorry you had this happen. I admit that I don't even go into Walmart. I have had way too many bad experiences with them
That's their fee for storing the item and holding it for you. All stores charge a fee of around $5. Doesn't matter how long you want it held, they have to work with the standard time that they use. Sorry you couldn't get the gift. No, I don't work for Walmart, lol, just used to use lay-a-way when my kids were little.
